  1. Dental Student
NYU & Columbia University are in NYC. 😎

I heard one bed room (off-campus) nearby NYU is approximately $1400 per month. 😱

Ok...then, are they in good shape? 😕
1. One bath room 2. One bed room 3. Not small (not studio type, poor air) 4. Sound proof 5. Not dirty

Especially, I hope to hear from those who had lived in California. 😛

Compared with housings in California (Typical Apartment complex near campus--> 2or 3 floor wood made earthquake proof buildings), how about NYC housings? (NYU or Columbia places PLZ)
1. Size 2. Pricing per type of room 3. Fitness center?? or other utilities

ANYBODY? 🙂

---Hope this thread can be also helpful for many people who are concerning about living in NYC-------------------------

Yeah, I'm interested in the same thing. A cali guy looking into Columbia. I wish I had something to offer...but with ya

I live in NYC. Columbia and NYU are in 2 totally different areas of the city.... Columbia is in a lower-class neighborhood (=cheaper housing, but not nearly as convenient/safe as NYU area.) I am actually not sure how much housing runs around there, but for NYU area, there is no way you would ever find a 1-BR for $1400. It would be close to impossible to even find a SMALL studio in a walk-up with bad air for $1400 near NYU... studios in the NYU area start at around $1500. If you want an elevator with your studio, you're looking at $2000. If you want a 1-BR all to yourself, think $2400 or so. If you are willing to share an apartment, costs can be significantly reduced. The $1400 number you were given was probably from someone sharing an apartment with 1 or 2 other people, and yes you can have your own bedroom, and sometimes your own bathroom, but it would not be your own apartment.

There are millions of housing options in NYC... but things fill up VERY quickly. I have a bunch of friends who live in Stuyvesant Town which is right near NYU... nice, new apts in a park-like setting (super rare for NYC.) My friends pay ~$1300 for their bedroom in a 3-BR apt (and actually, it is a 2BR converted to 3 by putting up a fake wall- very common in NYC- it actually looks/feels like a totally real wall though.) If you are willing to commute, you can try finding cheaper housing in Brooklyn or Queens. Astoria, Queens is a nice, young area that is convenient to the city (probably a 30-40 min commute to NYU campus.) There you can find 1BR's for $1400.

Oh also apts in NYC will feel VERY small compared to California. Your bed will be smack against the wall and closet space is minimal, and even nice kitchens are usually super tiny. But hey, it's NYC, the greatest city on earth! 🙂

Hope this helped a bit!

$1400 per month. 😱

I laughed when I saw this number. You might be able to get that in Boston if you're lucky... It isn't cheap at all.

In the NYU area (village) you are looking at ~1600 for a studio apartment. Columbias medical and MSPH campus is in a lower end/bit dangerous community in Manhattan. A studio in that neighborhood would probably be more in the low 1000's. However, I would not want to live there. Public transportation in NYC is excellent. You do not have to live right off of campus in order to have a reasonable commute and be able to connect socially with your classmates. If you are accepted to either of these Universities I am CONFIDENT they will provide you with off and on campus housing information. They have to. You may want to consider University housing. Also, parts of Queens (one of NYC's 5 boroughs) will give you a fairly reasonable commute to Manhattan. I had a colleague who studied law at NYU and lived in the Astoria section of Queens. I suspect you will pay a good 400 less to live in Manhattan a month. Just because it is not Manhattan. Feel free to PM me with questions.

REALLY got help! 👍

Queens....I know that place, cuz I have been to there a couple of times.

And, it was interesting to hear about commuting in NYC.

Got a sense how much it will cost to get my ideal place. Anyway, learning the fact that I can find a place near NYC, from which I can commute to NYC, is what I get today.

$1400 --> I think it was for a studio in NYC near NYU. (Not one bed room!) 😉

Ok, sounds like...the only thing left for NYU & Columbia is just to wait until I hear their conclusion.

THANKS!!

PS) HAHA! So, to get a suitable standard living condition, the price can't go lower. :nono: I did hear a lot of complaints about the housing in NYC.

To begin with, thanks for sharing info regarding NYC living cost. I really appreciate it!

What about living cost in Boston area pertinent to what we just had talked about NYC living cost? 🙂

1. Price for room type
2. Commuting issue
3. On campus housing

Btw, I just want to hear overall breif summary regarding living cost in Tufts, BU area.

Personal reason asking this; Cuz I've heard these two areas (NYC & Boston) are considered to be expensive areas. And, I really don't know about Boston now. 😕

Plus, I wonder it will cost $2000/mo+ for a suitable housing. I believe they may have shared rooms or lived in a really big APT. That's what I am thinking based on the price in LA. 😱

And, I also think living cost near campus will not that much expensive. The closer to the main campus, the cheaper the living cost will be! That's my thinking! 🙄

NOBODY?

There is no way that I could even afford even 1400/month at either NYU or Boston. Is it easy to get on campus housing for graduate students?

It's definitely cheaper to share apartments with people. I moved to NY 4 years ago without any clue on where to live, hit up craigslist, and within a week found a bedroom in a 2bdroom/1bath place 2 blocks away from school for $1300. 4 years later I'm still living in the same place cause you can't beat the location!

I am going to go contrarian on this and say be weary of commuting, while it certainly is doable and very easy vis-a-vis other parts of the country, living far away from campus can definitely put a dint on the social and fraternization aspect of dental school. Furthermore, at NYU at least the curriculum is staggered/tiered into groups, so you will consistently have long blocks of free time in your days, and if you live close the ability to quickly go home (nap/shower/change/eat) can alleviate a lot of the frustrations of dental school.

Also, my lease is up in August and I'm moving out, so if any incoming D1s are interested in taking over the lease on a great super quiet, "foresty" apartment near school, hit me up! : )

But no matter where you look, NYC is going to be very expensive compared to most places around the country, but however, it's New York F*ing city! And you get the chance to live here! I'm a classic california suburban guy and living in The City has been one of the best experiences of my life.

How are you able to pay for the tution?

how much is the dorm???

how much is the dorm???

but, I don't actually care how much dorm is.

My guess is....slightly less than $700~800/mo??? 🙄

I don't even know if they have a room just for a single person.

IF somebody can tell me, plz post it!

However, my major concern in this thread was about off-campus living.

🙂

anybody received housing packet yet??????

I remember it is supposed to be mailed in April.

Btw, do you think dorm (on-campus) housing at NYU is not poorer than off-campus housing in terms of quality, distance, price?

heard the on campus housing provided by NYU is mucho more expensive than getting ur own off campus housing.

OUR housing package yet?

Is it just that one page housing paper with purple coverage?
I don't think so!

I think they will send another package for OUR housing.

What do you know about this? SHARE~~~~~~

Why do you think it's more expensive? There must be many good reasons.

Do you think it's much better to visit the place one more time for housing?
If so, can anybody recommend me what I can do during that short period of time? (Ex. housing agencies near campus, which office I should visit, something like that!!)

I hope I can get the one without any prior appointment with any specific agencies, NYUCD housing office, and etc. Otherwise, plz anybody allows me to jump start for my sucess in search of a beautiful stay!! 🤣

NYC is experiencing a decline in renters due to the financial down fall recently and people are moving out. A lot of buildings are paying the brokers fee and giving 1 month free rent. Still it is expensive when compared to other parts of the country but "cheap" for NYC. NYU dorms are pricey my friends that have their own room are paying 1900 a month, I am not sure how much it is when you share a room.

If you guys are heading to NYU, come in July and get a place for august that's what i did. You'll get over the high rent soon enough, thats what loans are for.

nybits.com - apartments from the management that runs the building.
Craigslist.com - a lot of cheaper listings but beware of brokers they're sneaky. Read everything carefully before you sign.

Good luck..

Btw, can u decribe what a typical single studio looks like in NYC near NYUCD? ($1300~ Under $2000)

I really want to see real photos............. 🤣

i live in NYC but i don't know about the areas around Columbia. For NYU, if you can find a nice apartment in Chinatown if you are willing to pay for $1400-$1500. By nice, i don't mean spacious and new, but nice compared to most chinatown apartments. Plus, you can always take the bus to NYU in less than 10 mins from chinatown.

It sounds really interesting. Thanks! I will visit and look around the place.

Btw, did u say China town in Manhattan? Hm..Is there a China town in Manhattan? I've known there is only one China town in Flushing. 😱

i agree that most chinatown apartments are crappy, but not all. if you spend the time to look around, i am sure you'll find something nice in that area. I've heard that lots of landlords have tried to refurnish their apartments so they can increase the rent. By that, i mean they will ask about $1400 for one bedroom. However, the area is highly demanding in terms of apartments so it may be very difficult to find one.

anyway, good luck on apartment hunting.

is any1 looking for roommate(s)? juts got accepted and already apt hunting 🙂

I am also looking for housing! PM me if you have an available room in Aug 09! Thanks

graduate student, I received a message via NYU e-mail system yesterday.

Anyway, it's about housing application.

After looking around a few dorms thru their website, I've got a lot interested in staying at a dorm.

A dorm at NYU doesn't look like a typical dorm I am familiar with. It has no much different appearance from several hotels in NYC.

People say dorms are more expensive than off-campus living.

What are the advantages of staying at NYUCD dorms? Can anybody share information?

I think.....

pro..
Very close

The facility, equipment, and other features may be just appropriate for us who are dental students.

My neigbors will be NYU students.

Dining is provided.

con..
Slightly more expensive than off-campus housing

I believe entering and re-entering the room may be very tedious & difficult because of several possible additional inspections & procedures. (Such as ID swiping or frequent password input)

I may not be able to call those who are not NYU students. At least, there may be any limits in available times.

So, allow me and others to know more about NYUCD dorm life. Thanks!

Hi all, D2 here. Have a master bedroom available at waterside plaza (<5min walk to school). The room size is 14-4 X 9-5 and is going for 1100 plus electricity - this is a STEAL compared to the amount you will be paying through the dorms while you are in school. Its a 2bedroom converted to 3, with 1 bathroom. Youll be living with 2 other D2 students. The lease is from may 15, 2009-August 31, 2010. (a little before your research starts). Let me know if you are interested.

there is another room avaiable for $800 (lowest price in a high end apartment near school!!). 7 min. walk from the school. You can move in May/June. The lease ends in July 15th. If you like living in the place, you can renew with us. Roommates will be currently D1s so we can show u the ropes when u are here. Perfect for people coming to do research during the summer or people who want to come to NYC early and look for a new place. PM me if interested.

Btw, imho dorm is not worth it for $1800 per month.

Btw, I want to ask if the reservation fee (kind of deposit) for NYUCD dorm is nonrefundable. 😎

what a typical NYUCD dorm looks like?

I mean...not like the features on their websites..but........

1) Overall impression
2) Size of the building
3) Environment
4) Smoking, drinking
5) Security
6) Whether there are any limits on moving in and out of the building during a whole day

Especially #4&6 in bold texts I Really want to know!!
