I will be starting grad school (second career) for an MSW this January. I was accepted to NYU's 16 month Accelerated Program with scholarship and am still waiting to hear from Hunter.

Does anyone have experience with either program? I would like to focus on clinical- so I know NYU is probably the best program. However, the cost (even with scholarship) is still much more than Hunter. Will I be at a disadvantage from a clinical standpoint if I go to Hunter?

Thanks!

I am currently applying to both programs you mention, but the two year track at NYU, as well as many other schools in the NYC/NY area. I also attended Hunter as an undergrad, and I knew people in the MSW program. As far as I know, many of them obtained an LMSW and eventually an LCSW. Thus, they didn't seem to have any problems obtaining the clinical licensure and doing clinical work. Hunter is one of the top social work programs in the country. I personally do not think you would have a problem.

i've also heard that hunter is one of the top social work programs. but do you know what it is that has given it such a good reputation? i haven't heard any specifics; just the general claim that "it's a very good and well respected program".

Not sure exactly-- I too have heard that their MSW program is very well known and respected. I would also imagine that because of the low tuition Hunter receives a ton of applications resulting in more stringent admissions criteria. I have also heard that the 16 month program at Hunter is new this year...does anyone know anything about that?

I am so conflicted-- at this point I have still not heard from Hunter. Taking into account a social worker's salary on top of my previous school loans, I don't know if it makes sense for me to go to pay the high tuitioin at NYU even though that is where I'd love to go! Maybe I'll win the lottery in the next few months 🙂

Don't get me started on school loans. I already have an MA in psych from a private university, and if I go to another private university for my MSW, I will be even more in debt 🙁

It is possible that Hunter might have more stringent requirements because of their low tuition, etc. Though, I have known people to get into the MSW program at Hunter that weren't rocket scientists. Granted, they received their BA from Hunter, so that might have gave them an edge ::shrugs:::

When I was applying in NYC, it was my understanding that Hunter was more difficult to get into due to their status as the only public school MSW available in the area- aka, significantly lower tuition for state residents.

It was also my understanding that they were almost exclusively administrative (per my supervisor, who went to Hunter through the administrative SW track). However that was 1996 and things change.

I wound up not applying because a) I wanted something more clinical and b) my status as "in-state" was questionable since I was in NYC as a full-time volunteer, not employee.

After attending a Hunter Admission Info Session I learned that the Accelerated Program (18 months) is for clinical focus only.

Unfortunately I think the fear of additional loans is going to rule my decision!

Do you know what the focus is for the two year track?

I think in general the focus is on policy and community organization; however, they have various tracks. For some reason the 16 month program is only for those interested in clinical (Hunter calls it "children and family"). Take a look at their website it gives more detail.

what type of gpa is required, Im asking for a friend, shes interesed in the hunter program.
