Hey Everyone,

I am looking for some leads for clinical psychology post-doc positions in the NYC and NJ area. While there are several research and clinical research post-docs, I am looking for one that is geared towards clinical practice. I have only been able to find a handful.

If possible, I was hoping to generate a list and see what there is available that I may not have considered. Please post any leads you have, as I am sure this will be helpful to many others as well.

THANKS!!!!

Which research postdocs have you seen in the NYC and NJ area? Also, have you checked out the VAs? I remember seeing a few VA clinical postdoc listings in NYC/NJ. I will go through my email and see if I still have the listings.

In addition to VA positions (brooklyn, manhattan, bronx), did you check out counseling centers in the area (fordham, nyu, rutgers, montclair state, setan hall, columbia, new school, princeton)? I don't know that all these schools have postdocs, but I have seen postings for several in the past. I would just google counseling centers directly since they don't often advertise.

I would also consider clinical research post-docs since they will allow you to get your hours for licensure (for NY your hours don't need to be face to face), often pay more than clinical post-docs, and get fewer applicants. Clinical research post-docs also look good on your CV when you apply for clinical positions later. Its only a year so its good to consider more options if you are geographically limiting yourself to NYC and NJ. Nobody really talks about the shortage of clinical post-doctoral positions, particularly if you are applying in one geographical region.

Unfortunately, I can't speak to the area of the country. I was wondering if you need to/want to do a formal post-doc or will supervised hours in any setting count? I got my post-doc hours by cold-calling (via letter with resume) large practices in the area. Through this method, I got my post-doc position and interviewed for one other.

:luck:

Agreed, with the caveat that these types of positions are usually looking to produce clinical researchers and if you are a clinical person with no/limited publication history, you are unlikely to be competitive for such positions. Also, these tend to be two-year positions, because it typically takes 2 years to amass the required number of clinical hours for licensure.

That is sort of my situation. I have pubs from the past, when I was interested in a career in research. But I realized that was not my passion and I do not want to commit to a clinical research post-doc. I would not be competitive for those positions either.

The counseling centers seem to be the only clinical post-docs, along with the 2 offered via the VA in health psychology. I was hoping there might be a few more similar to the VA, like in a medical center, hospital, or community mental health clinic.

I thought about this before, I was looking for something more formal. I wouldn't rule it out though. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for taking the time to do that, psychstudent5, I really appreciate it.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in CBT and DBT at Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants of Westchester and Manhattan

White Plains, NY

Postdoc Description
Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning September of 2013. CBC is an evidence-based treatment center that serves children, adolescents, adults, families and couples. Our center was founded in 2004 by Drs. Lata McGinn and Alec Miller, both of whom are internationally recognized experts in their respective fields of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBC is comprised of a select group of highly skilled clinicians who have been intensively trained in CBT and DBT, and who have obtained additional specialized training for a variety of disorders. We provide comprehensive treatment in both CBT and DBT. We have a collegial and stimulating environment and offer an outstanding opportunity to receive comprehensive training and supervision in CBT and DBT.

Post-doctoral fellows will conduct individual, family and group therapies, and co-lead one or more CBT groups and/or DBT skills training groups with highly trained therapists/supervisors. Fellows receive several hours of individual and group supervision per week coupled with participation in a weekly DBT therapist consultation meeting and didactic seminars on CBT and DBT. This comprehensive training experience also includes monthly CBT consultation team, as well as a lecture series in which nationally and internationally renowned speakers are invited from the CBT and DBT communities. Fellows may also have the opportunity to supervise pre-doctoral psychology students, and receive supervision and training in this area.

In addition, post-doctoral fellows will be eligible to apply for an optional 2nd year of supervision and training under the new title and salary of junior psychologist. In this role, the junior psychologist will supervise pre-doctoral psychology students and further develop areas of specialization and interest (e.g., starting specialized groups, giving talks in the community, co-authoring manuscripts). This addition to our postdoctoral program reflects both the expansion of our practice, and our dedication to providing comprehensive training that prepares psychologists for multiple career opportunities in the field.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join our cohesive team of clinicians who are dedicated to clinical training and to providing evidence-based services. To learn more about CBC, please visit our website at: www.cognitivebehavioralconsultants.com.

Applicants should have completed their doctoral degree and an APA approved internship by the start date, and have prior experience conducting CBT with children, adolescents, adults and families. Experience or interest in DBT is highly desirable. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.

Interested applicants should submit electronic copies of their CV, cover letter, and three letters of reference to [email protected] (Attn.: Office Manager). In their CV or cover letter, applicants should describe their CBT (and if relevant, DBT) experiences, including courses in graduate school, specific workshops, classes, and any other type of training. Applicants should also include information regarding the number of patients treated with CBT (and if relevant, DBT), the patients' ages, presenting problems, names of supervisors, as well as length and type of supervision. The subject line should read: "CBC Postdoc Application". General email inquiries are also welcome via email, on the phone, or in person at the ABCT convention (through pre-arrangement). Application review will start in mid-December and the deadline for applications is January 11, 2013

UHS\'s mission is to enhance learning and student success by advancing the health and well-being of our diverse University community. This mission is pursued and supports the University\'s purpose by using current knowledge of health and human development to guide responsive, high quality clinical, prevention, and consultation services.

In 1910, Princeton established itself as the first college or university in the United States to identify the subspecialty of college mental health and create a distinct mental health service. In 1925, with the opening of the Isabella McCosh Infirmary, now called the McCosh Health Center, Princeton became the first institution of higher education to situate its overnight Infirmary alongside all other medical and health-related services for students. This integrated design has been a hallmark of Princeton\'s student health program?a brick and mortar embodiment of holistic, integrative care. Not sure how willing you are to go into further debt, but the post-doc program at NYU in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis sounds incredible. They have some of the top names in the contemporary psychoanalytic movement teaching their curriculum (Jessica Benjamin, Jody Davies). I would imagine that a lot of great thinking and learning occurs in that program. Depends on how interested you are in practicing analysis and learning depth psychology within a very expensive (and probably still very competitive) program. You will get to practice psychoanalysis (face to face in all cases, I believe) and get supervision from some of the best thinkers in the field. Like I said, the cost of the program is expensive (mostly as a result of the personal analysis they want you to go through), but if you are interested in learning/practicing depth psychology, and you are willing to take on the debt, then you should look into it a little more. From what I know, I believe they are a very reputable program that lives up to the name.

Thanks for taking to the time to respond and pass along this lead. If my orientation was psychoanalytic I would definitely consider it. The only downside would be the cost.

However. I view myself as a cognitive behavioral therapist. Problematically, there is less opportunities in NYC for this type of training. Hopefully, there will be more in the future,

Funny that you would recommend this given that your screen name is "Living off Loans"! I have heard that the program is of high quality as well, but I believe that when the OP asked about post-doctoral opportunities he was inquiring about paid opportunities not places where he would be paying tuition for 2 more years! I actually wonder if anyone can afford a program like this after they graduate as an early career psychologist. Sounds like a good fit for someone who has a ton of $$ and time to attend analysis 3 days per week and pay more tuition.

It turns out that NYC/NJ is a CBT mecca actually! I wish my state had this much CBT Action! I googled "CBT new york" and behavior therapy NY and I found close to 10 group practices and many take post-docs:

CBT/DBT associates
American Insitute for Cognitive Therapy
Institute for Behavior Therapy

You can also google CBT NJ or behavior therapy NJ. I also found several that take post-docs.

I was aware of the 3 you listed and will be applying to each. The concerns I have with small or medium size group practices is the emphasis on training and career development. For example, AICT is well known training institution for cognitive therapy in NYC. I was not able to find anything about formal post docs, ones that emphasize training and career development, outside of counseling centers.

I think that is the problem for all of us who are applying in one geographic region. I am located on the west coast and I had a difficult time finding more than 8-10 sites to apply to in total within 80 miles of me, and i'm even open to places somewhat outside my area of expertise, as long as its not too different. You'll have to be flexible and make some sacrifices if you want to live in one region. If you want CBT sites only in NY and NJ that is somewhat narrow.

I know this is a pretty old post, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any current leads for sites that may be taking clinical postdocs next year. I'll be applying relatively widely, but NYC just seems so appealing!

I was starting to think about this as well- thanks for posting! I joined the appic list serve, but I don't think they will start posting for next year until a bit later in the year
