Get to live in a really fun neighborhood in the east village, which is where tons of young people out of college move. Will definitely have a kick ass social life. Downside is that it is really pricey, and may not be one to turn down over your state school. Columbia>>Cornell>NYU>Sinai>Einstein.

The East Village gets old quickly when you've got work to do. It's a great place to goof off for a while, but a terrible place to live if you need a peaceful place to study or space in which to live. It is expensive and full of former suburban kids trying to look "edgy," but who pay $1000+/month on rent and live in about 300-500 sq. ft. (pretty standard w/ no AC and a 3-4 floor walkup.)

On the other hand, you can order almost any kind of food at any hour of the day and the neighborhood is basically a parade of drunk/drugged up men/women who are desperate for a man/woman with earning potential. I say "man/woman" because not everybody cares around here and you can't always tell either... 😉

I like Cornell the most. Great hospitals and research dollars. I've heard Columbia is too snobby (don't flame). NYU is NYU is guess.

Of course, ripping a school's student body is a great way to assuage the dejectedness one might feel upon rejection...
chill. i wasn't ripping on any student body, just pointing out a fact of NYC living. having lived/worked in manhattan and brooklyn for the past 5 years i've definitely felt the "ivory tower" mentality in many parts of manhattan life (see http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ivo1.htm for a definition, which is actually slightly different than the way i was defined it before, my bad), which one doesn't find nearly as much in the outer boroughs.

Anyone have any info on NYMC? Where the hell is Valhalla? What's the school like? Seems strange to do your basic sciences in a suburb than move into the city for clerkships? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

the nymc campus is in valhalla, in westchester county - about 30-40 minutes from manhattan. i'm not an expert on the school, but i know that there are lots of affiliated hospitals, everywhere from nyc to upstate.

I'm a 4th Year at Mount Sinai, and this NYC competition thing is really silly. Especially the NYU/Sinai divide. The fact is, it's certainly true a "better" school might provide more opportunities - more "famous" faculty to tell you to retract more and such - but at the end of the day, it's how you do rather than where you went. So go where you'll be happy. Forget about all the uptightness and really soak up the atmosphere at each interview and ask yourself if you can deal with it for at least four years. The only other factor I'd consider is who'll give you the most cash!
