Hi :

I am looking for an apt near NYCOM for this coming semester. I wanted to know what areas (towns/townships) are within 15 to 20 minutes from the campus. I did do some research myself on the net using map quest and thing but with NY traffic I need advise from someone living in LI or near NYCOM to give me a better estimate. I live in NJ and dont know too much about this. So any hlep would be great!

Thank you. 👍

Hey Daisy,

Are u currently signed up at the NYCOM webboard?

I would use the NYCOM webboard first. Close towns are Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Westbury, Old Westbury, Greenvale, Roslyn, Roslyn Heights, Brookville. If you have any questions, let me know. I live in Glen Cove and it takes me like 10 min.

do oyu think it is necessary to live within 10-15 mionutes from the school? or is a half an hour away ok? do a lot of poeple stay around school to study? is it very important to live near school for anatomy lab?

I personally love that I live within 10 min of NYCOM. I can run home for lunch, I don't run into any traffic really, and I can always buzz to school at the last min for studying. I had friends that live about 20 min away and their commute became 45 with traffic, so it depends where you live, but traffic can become ridiculous. A good number study at school, I wouldn't say alot. It all depends on where you get work done. It does help somewhat with anatomy lab, but really you're only up there on your own studying like once a week (well for me, it depends on your grasp on the material). It really all depends on where you study best and your tolerance for traffic.

Hello,

I currently have a room in a three bedroom house 10 min driving from NYCOM. I will also be starting NYCOM in the fall. The place was handed down to me by a current 2nd year student who will move for her rotations so the place is free. I currently have one more roomate who took the second room, and there is one room left. This place is pretty sweet, alot of space, 2.5 bathrooms, and two floors! Please email me directly at [email protected] of you are interested!

just wanted to let you know that I have a GREAT room available in HICKSVILLE (awsone location...15 min from NYCOM and 5 min from LIE) for rent for the month of June. Here is a brief description:
It is a HUGE room in a house in Hicksville that is shared with 3 graduating NYCOM students and a former NYCOM student (currently a resident).
the house is fully equipped with Cable, wireless Internet, washer/dryer, dishwasher, full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a large living space and backyard. I have a dresser, desk and TV that the occupant may borrow. Rent is usually $650/month (the room is the house's master bedroom so it is huge!)
If interested, feel free to contact me at 714 588 5706
Thanks,
Yasmine

Thank you. 👍

I avoided this school and Touro NY for this reason, the NY area cost of living is insane. I was researching housing around Touro California and it wasn't too bad, and that school is in the San Francisco area.

How bad is the traffic on northern going to NYCOM in the morning?

i live in bayside/flushing queens. and its a 30 minute drive; 20 minute without traffic. still, i would suggest living closer to the school

Take the LIE. Northern has too many traffic lights. I travel from queens to school and the shortest it has taken my to get to school is about 20 min. The longest has been about an hour (crazy insane traffic).

The northern state pkwy doesn't have any traffic lights, its a highway. I have lived in Hicksville my whole life and have to say its really close to NYIT but taking that single lane road, Cedar Swamp (?), sucks.
Btw, one of the tricks of the LIE which I never understood why everyone else doesn't do is using the service roads. Granted there are lights but it cuts my commute to work from 30-45minutes in LIE traffic to 20minutes max.

I'm in Forest Hills and it took me about 30-45 mins to get to school if I left at 7:30am. I usually took the LIE which had a bit of traffic right at the queens/LI border around Douglaston, but after that it was clear sailing.

Watch out for traffic along glen cove road though. It can get really congested on there after 8am or so.

Probably the traffic going to the bridges.

But yes, for the most part if you're driving eastbound on the LIE in the morning you shouldn't hit bad traffic at all. I used to head out that way in the mornings for a job and the only hot spots in the morning east bound were near Flushing Meadow Corona Park for people getting onto the Van Wyck and over by Douglaston getting onto the Whitestone or Cross Island. Other than that eastbound shouldn't be a problem, all the heavy traffic should be moving west. Its just any exit that leads to a bridge, as noted above, clogs down the eastbound traffic, so sometimes its just a matter of timing in my experience. I don't know when you need to be in class, but after 9AM its pretty much open lanes... 7:30-8 was always hit or miss for me.

After Queens though I can't comment much but I can't imagine it being much worse.

This comes in handy too. It just depends on the day or how far you have to travel though. If you only need to go a couple more exits, service road all the way.

I was assuming that since the poster said bayside that he meant northern blvd not northern state pkwy...of course northern state doesn't have traffic lights, but northern blvd has a fair share of them.

Haha, my bad, being from LI I never think of 25A as Northern Blvd, just 25A, and always assume Northern = Northern State.

haha Oh, the joys of queens and LI. See, I had always called Northern state Pkwy the Grand Central Parkway. 🙂
