hey guys,
i recently got accepted to nycom and umdnj-som and i need help deciding which one to choose. i am from northern New Jersey which is about 1hr from both schools. based on your knowledge of each school, can anyone help me decide? i will appreciate any input. thanks.

I'm obviously going to be biased, and don't explain myself quite as well as Nate, so whenever he sees this thread he can give you his spiel about UMDNJ. I am however good at searching so here's a couple threads with other people trying to make the same decision.

It also would be helpful to other repliers if you specified what you're looking for in a school.

Both schools are excellent. When I went to UNDMJ for a conference last year I was VERY impressed. I like the SMALL class size, and the numerous clinical faculty on campus.

With that said, NYCOM has excellent clinical clerkships and consistantly matches many, many graduates at excellent high powered residencies. But hey, UNDMJ does pretty good too.

I'm not trying to sway you in any direction 🙄

Good luck with your decision.

You will receive what you put into your education (so basically go wherever you're happiest). That being said you'll put a crap load less money into your education if you go to UMDNJ.

The short and sweet is to save your self at least 50,000 dollars by going to UMDNJ. There is nothing being offered differently at NYCOM in my opinion worth that much money. That is unless you are wealthy and money is no object for you then the decision may be harder. The two schools are quite different, though.

At NYCOM you have a huge class of over 200 people compared to less than a hundred at UMDNJ. This has its advantages and disadvantages either way but it is up to you to decide which is best for you. UMDNJ has a teaching hospital on campus and a good clinical education with most of its affiliated hospital nearby. Not to mention you have NYC, Philly, and DC all within reasonable distances for electives. NYCOM is a good distance from NYC and with the traffic forget it!

I will be honest and tell you that I turned down my NYCOM interview because I was already accepted at UMDNJ so I don't have much personal information about NYCOM to compare to. However, what turned me off about NYCOM the most besides for the class size and tuition is the location. You may think since it is in NY it is ideal but in reality you will have as quick and probably much less stressful ride from UMDNJ into the city than you will from NYCOM.

Both schools will get the job done and are excellent so it is up to you to decide what is important. If you want more info on UMDNJ here is a link to my latest post about it:

Good luck on your decision and know that in reality you can't go wrong.

SInce you are NJ resident, I would go to NJSOM. Same education for much less money. Good luck

thanks everyone for all your advice. i have decided to go to umdnj. i was thinking nycom had a reason for asking for such a high tuition . but so far i have found nothing special. with the reasonable tuition, location and class size, i know i will be happy at umdnj. thanks again.

any advice for preparing for medical school?

not for anything..but i doubt a 3.5 hour drive from UMDNJ to the city can compare to a 30 mins drive from NYCOM to the city -- which is basically access the finest medical institutions in the world -- thats worth the extra $50,000 ....in the long run.

3.5 hrs. vrs. 30 min.? Have you actually driven these routes? Maybe if you ride a scooter from UMDNJ and take a helicopter from NYCOM then that would be accurate. Actually, it is only 1.5 hours from UMDNJ on the NJ turnpike into Manhattan from my experience and also according to Mapquest (which is incredibly accurate on the east coast), 2 hours if traffic is really bad. But, from NYCOM it is at least an hour into the city on the fiery doom hell spawn LIE. Of course, if that is worth 50k to you then more power to you. Nothing against NYCOM itself, but the location is not ideal to everyone.

My bladder agrees that the LIE is a horrible, horrible, horrible "expressway".

You're probably better off with the LIR. Or whatever the train is called.

i make that drive from UMDNJ-SOM to NYC at least once a week, from exit 4 on the turnpike to manhattan, 90mins. sometimes less, but thats cause i fly. its not bad at all. from LI, often you sit on the LIE that long.

also, philadelphia is a 12 min drive from UMDNJ. and DC is under 2 hours also.

the first time i visited nycom (on a sunday) it was a 2 hour drive which was okay. but unfortunatly the day before my interview it snowed, traveling to the school then took me 6 hours (tuesday morning). on the otherhand, umdnj even with snow takes a max of 2-2 1/2 hours
