Hi everyone, looking for some advice here. Accepted off WL at NYMC today, been accepted to USUHS. I've been given a week to decide (confirmed w/ NYMC office of Admissions), financial aid should be released within a day or two.

Obviously, I would not have applied to USUHS if I did not want to serve in the US Army.

USUHS - best choice for career in military medicine, financial stability
NYMC - much more diverse in terms of clinical experience (correct me if I'm wrong), civilian residency (I am interested in surgery)

Thoughts?

If you go to NYMC are you going into civilian medicine or military medicine? Would you do HSPS if you do NYMC + Military medicine?

Because if your end goal is to go into Military medicine, USUHS is the obvious choice.

I think it really comes down to how much you really want civilian or military medicine/lifestyle. I'm sure its possible to do surgery at USUHS so I wouldn't count that as a pro for NYMC. There is always HSPS at NYMC as an option for financial stability.

Thanks for the responses! I know how annoying some of these X vs Y threads can be. For me it's a decision between the ability to do a civilian residency vs army residency and whether one is ultimately "better" than the other. I've read through most of the USUHS vs HPSP threads and for my own situation, USUHS would be the better choice, especially since the Army usually does not offer civilian deferments. To me there isn't that big of a difference between 4 and 7 years in the long run. I'm only in my 20's so my career could be at least 20+ years

I can't really explain attest to the strengths of residency programs. I haven't heard or read anything about them being horrible or below civilian as a whole so I don't think there really is anything to worry about.

If you are actually planning on sticking with it for awhile, I believe you are considered active duty while at USUHS and in your residency so once your payback is done you'll technically have been an active military member for 15+ years, which means once you are done with your payback you'd be only 5 years or less from your pension.
