Hi everyone, I'm very fortunate to have been accepted to two schools this cycle. I'm hoping to get some feedback on whether I'm making the right decision or whether I should reconsider. I'm from Cali and I have to go OOS but hope to return for residency.

Virginia Tech Carilion
Pros
  • -- Small class size (42) - stronger chance to get close to faculty/make connections
  • -- Research integrated into curriculum and strong research program
  • -- Good match list (100% match rate)
  • -- Housing is pretty cheap
  • -- True P/F

Cons
  • -- The medical school is newer and less known.
  • -- Roanoke is a small city in VA, I'm from California so I wouldn't be used to it.

NYMC
Pros
  • -- Location is way better than Roanoke
  • -- Easier to match to NY (Though I mostly care about matching to CA).
  • -- More people so higher chance of finding people I get along with

Cons
  • -- Huge class (200+)
  • -- Research isn't prioritized (I'm interested in academic medicine) or required
  • -- Not a fan of their dorm-style living (and off-campus is more expensive)
  • -- Not P/F

Summary: I'm leaning towards VTC as I got a pretty good vibe there when I interviewed, the school is newer but has done well with its recent graduates, and there are strong research opportunities. On the other hand, NYMC is in a more populated area, more diverse, and is a more established program (though not necessarily more prestigious?). I hope to match back to Cali for residency, though I'd rather practice in NY than Virginia (and both schools do match to Cali).

I would appreciate any comments/thoughts, especially if I'm forgetting to consider anything important. Thank you!

The P/F difference alone is enough to choose VTC in my opinion. Also VTC is heavy into research which could help position you better in that regard.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you think it's also good that VTC's 3rd and 4th year are P/F? I imagine it just puts more emphasis on Step 1 scores?
