can we get something outside of this (such as hp) or is it best to stick within their recommendations?

Get whatever you want...does not matter...i bought a toshiba ..got a great deal on it bought the 3 year warranty and it was better than the nyu computer.

Just out of curiosity, do we need to bring our labtop everyday to school?
If it is, I am thinking about buying a small one.

you really dont need to bring it much. Its not really mandatory in any of the courses...u just bring it to surf the net while somebody is lecturing
