hey everyone
i just wanted to ask your opinion on NYU's dental school..in that adea book i bought it seems like its a selective school...and i was concerned about that because i really want to go there....although a couple of my kaplan classmates and teachers have told me that because they're so expensive they let alot of people with somewhat lower dat scores in (17 AA 18 AA) is there any truth to this?

no. NYU is one of the toughest schools to get into because you do not have a concrete idea of what types of stats they are looking for. Plenty of my friends and I have over 3.4 GPAs and 18s, 19s on DATS, applied early, have extracurrics and all that stuff and we were either waitlisted or simply not even contacted for an interview. If your stats are really high, they don't even bother to contact you because they suppose you will get into your state school with those high stats and won't even attend NYU.

GOOD LUCK, but there's really nothing you can do to guarantee your acceptance to NYU.

Wow Dentist 2 Be, that is such an interesting theory... i have never thought of it that way... Buffalo is an amazing school!!! congrats!!!

I wanted to go to NYU partly for the NYC life and I was accepted without an interview.

But the NYC life was not worth the money I'd be borrowing had I decided on NYU.

Read up on what people who went there to interview had to say about NYU.

how did you get in without an interview? were you a special case, or they really grant acceptances without interviews?

Hey i looked at the stats page, and i find them hard to believe. How come the avg gpa at most schools is <3.6?? I see that harvard has 3.78, which is as high as its medical school, that is they even reject people with perfect gpa... But most other schools are not even close.... Does this mean that the rank of the dental school you go to is very important, just like for law schools?? Also i find it hard to believe that one could get into columbia dental school with a 3.4. After all most columbia grad schools (like math, physics, etc) would require substantial research and 3.8 gpa. Yet dentists make as much $ as doctors. so what is up?

Also i know that most dental schools require biochemistry? And the DAT contains some sort of perception test? So it seems that Dental schools has even more requirements than Medschool, yet the statistics show that it is so much less selective?

because there are only like 30 dental schools in the US, theyr'e not ranked at all. More or less you pick a school based on their specifics/environment/location and COST. There is very little "prestige" factor between the dental schools really.... after you graduate no one cares where you went to school... The avg GPAs are just that, avg. GPAs, people with lower have gotten in, people with higher have not.

I don't know anything about medical schools and grad schools. Could care less. They're their own thing.

i know a group of dentist's who own a few practices. One went to BU, the other to Tuft's, and another to Harvard. They all make the same amount of money. So in the end we all make money based on our skills and not where we went to school, unless you specialize then it might matter.

By the way...a dentist is a doctor (of dental surgery).

I am sure a lot of med schools require applicants to take biochem as a pre-req as well (I am just not sure which ones)...so far only 4-5 dental schools require you to take biochem before dental school (UNLV, Tufts, and Indiana off hand...I know there are more but those are the schools that I am 100% about)
