Hi all,

Have any of you heard about NYU having financial problems over that past few years? I heard that they have been and have had to depend on the other graduate programs to pull them out of near bankruptcy.

Did any of you go to the second look weekend? Was this discussed at all?

I am just a little scared to go to a school that might be having these problems especially if they did not address them during the second look weekend.

Any thoughts?

I haven't heard anything about NYU having financial difficulties. Perhaps when it was affiliated with Mount Sinai (since Sinai is in a bit of red tape) but their marriage has dissolved. I got the impression that it had a lot of money to throw around, since it's building a new 16 story research complex on 1st Avenue. Don't take my word for it; if you're seriously considering NYU and you're worried about its finances, ask the people in admissions.

What was the second look weekend?

Oops. 13 stories. You're right. They really are not so loaded.😉

I was at the second look weekend. It was amazing!

Dean Rey said the medical school had an 8 million dollar surplus this past year.

The second look weekend was great. NYU really did sell itself well. However, with more information from inside sources, it seems that NYU as a whole is on a very tight budget and more importantly, its medical school typically loses money and does not contribute to the wealth of the school and has been a burden on other graduate programs to fund it (for example, the new medical building, etc). Now that the other programs are also on a tight budget and with a newly appointed president at NYU, there seems to be a lot of tension and opposing views on continuing to provide the funding to the medical school.

Having been accepted at other medical schools besides NYU, I am debating if this should be factored in when making my final decision? Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

Ok this will sound dumb. But there was a second look weekend?! When was it? I have heard nothing about it. I even called and asked them and they said their wasn't one back in January.

Am I missing something?

The second look weekend was this past weekend and all applicants accepted were invited to NYU.

OK, when did people hear about this second look weekend? Did you find out by mail or email? I didn't hear anything about this and I'm a little pissed...

I didn't receive an invitation from them either. For those of you who attended the second look weekend, when did you receive your acceptance? Maybe they'll have another second look weekend?

The second look weekend was only for MD-PhD students and URMs. The second look weekend for everybody else was suppose to be this past weekend also, but it was postponed until a later date. That's why some of you who were accepted haven't heard anything (no need to be pissed off).

Secondly, to Georgeiscurious, who are your sources? Who told you that the med school is on a tight budget? I find it hard to believe that the med school could be in financial trouble when they have an 8 million dollar surplus, and they are building a new cancer center and a new research center. Are you sure that your sources were accurate?

Thanks for the info lillian03. I'm no longer pissed.🙂

Are you a current student at NYU? Did you go to the second look for MD-PhD's and URM's?

What do you all think about NYU? Do people like the curriculum? Are the students happy?

Thanks for the info. Once I thought about it, I figured it was just for Md/Phd and URM's but for a sec I was feeling rather unloved...

I haven't heard much if anything from them in the last 3 months since I got my acceptance. So I was starting to think they had lost my address...

I hope they have a second look weekend for the rest of the applicants.

Called this morning. They said there will NOT be a second look weekend.

To lillian03's question -
My sources are accurate and trustworthy. my sources will not and do not have any reason to dissuade me. that is why i put the post up to find out what others would do in this situation. any thoughts? Thanks.

Interesting that the second look weekend got canceled for non-MD/PhDs and non-URMs... maybe the financial issues at NYU are valid...

I highly doubt cancelling a Second Look has anything to do with potential financial issues...From what I've heard about most schools' Second Looks, they're not exactly expensive to hold. For a one day event, NYU would have to provide (basically) continental breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and perhaps some handouts, which would mean xeroxing costs. I highly doubt they'd have to pay students and faculty to speak to the prospective students.

Anyway, I know for a fact (from inside sources) that NYU Medical Center is doing well, and while most other NYC hospitals are loosing money, NYUMC is making a profit, and so they are undertaking several new projects.

I interviewed at NYU Med (Ph.D.) in late january and noted that the medical campus is installing brand new flat screens all over the place to replace paper bulletin boards. to me the installation of at least a dozen $8000-$10000 televisions does not seem to be a sign that NYU Med is short on cash.
