NEW YORK, N.Y. - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says backup power has been lost at New York University hospital and the city is working to move people out.

The mayor delivered a news conference Monday night and said rain was tapering off in the city and the storm surge was expected to recede by midnight.

The hospital complex is near the East River in an area of lower Manhattan where flooding has been reported.

Bloomberg says a few parts of lower Manhattan still have power. He said there have been a large number of fires reported from downed power lines.

That's insane, I can't even imagine.

Sounds like absolute chaos. I imagine staff is wracking up tons of OT as many people probably can't make it into work.

Pretty crazy up in the city. Pretty lucky I wasn't affected to bad. I live in the UES and still have power and everything. But subways are completely flooded..a lot with salt water which is terrible. All of downtown has no power.

The winds were pretty damn strong. I live by the water right off the FDR and was trying to just walk a little outside of my building to see what it was like. It was definitely blowing me over a little and I am no small person. Towards the end of the night my street def has some flooding. The FDR was completely flooded. You should check out pictures of the car garages and the subway..pretty crazy.

For example...this is my subway stop
