Hi, I have an interview at NYU on Monday and so far, I've only looked into Ramada Inn and The Marcel because they were two of the closest ones to NYU. I was just wondering if anyone could give me feedback on these two hotels or any other suggestions and if the area is safe?

Thank you.

I was at the Marcel. Its a nice tredy hotel, but my room was ridiculously small. If you can find something cheaper, I would go for it.

Good luck at NYU.

Thanks man. Everyone is so helpful on this site.

Did you pay their "discount price for NYU students?" I called them and it was $135, much higher than all the internet reservation services had for Marcel.

Yeah, I paid the NYU rate. I was there for two nights and paid roughly $350. Make sure you clear up the type of room (twin, single, etc). They gave me a broom closet.

Dont waste your money on hotels...why not try a hostel?? The American Dream Hostel is just down the street from NYU dental...just step out the door and walk 3 mins and you are there!

If you dont mind sleeping in a dorm, its only $40/person, but if you want your own private room its only $60/person. Its still a bit expensive on hostel standards, because I have never paid more than $15/night for any hostel Ive ever been in, but its much much cheaper than the Marcel! And you can meet backpackers from all over the world and perhaps tour around with them if you have the time....So you should really check it out...here is the website:

Why not just sleep in the subways? You don't spend a dime, and get to know the real NY culture. You could even do some free examinations too. Think about it, in your interview you could say that you started a study of the dental effects of crack-cocaine and heroine on the subway species. It would be great!!!

 Raidernation, from my experience, I think many people DO sleep in the subway.

hmmm i guess i will look into that subway option since I wont get back from Philly to NY until probably 7pm and was gonna kill time in airport until the early morning flight. That subway option does sound appealing now 😀

Actually to save money, I have slept in strange places....like park benches, lots of train station floors, trucks, overnight trains and buses, but the best was a cement slab in the middle of the jungle covered by only a VERY small mosquito net meant for only one person.....it was scary because we couldnt sleep with all the noises the damn animals were making....its tough at first, but once your tired, it doesnt matter where you are!!!

nah...its not that Im weird....its just that my friend and I are cheap! When you have $400 dollars with you and have to live in another country for 5 weeks, and get back home somehow, you gotta skim!

I don't think this guy is cheap! He's actually smart. Why spending so much money on something that is not worth it. I stayed at the marcel too, which ended up costing me 150 bucks (135 + tax). If I had the info on the hostel thing before I went there, I would have done it too.

Thanks DrNO....I think the same way....why not save $100 and buy a minidisc player or something with it....and trust me, if you are gonna be in NYC for some time, that $100 is gonna come in handy!!

Dont get turned off by hostels...its true some can be grungy, but honestly the best part is meeting young students from around the world, which means good friends to go party with for the night where that $100 saved can come in handy! 😉

The hostel...fine...but I was referring to the park benches, train station floors, and cement slabs in the jungle. :scared:

yah your right....the cement slab in the jungle didnt work out well...probably the worst night of sleep in my life, but it was worth a try...anyways, we were in the jungles of Tikal in Guatemala, so the next day we were so pumped with adrenalin that the lack of sleep didnt do anything to us! Has anyone else been to Tikal.......SOOOO amazing!!

Im sure you are all familiar with it from Return of the Jedi....remember when Luke sees Obi-Wan, and Anakin's ghosts at the end of the movie in front of some temples...well those are the Mayan ruins of Tikal.....INCREDIBLE! Totally worth rubbing against my male friend for the night on a cement slab 😉
