hey guys!

I was just wondering for the rest of you who got interviews where are you planning on staying?

I'm from western NY and everything is significantly cheaper/simpler here and i dont really know my way around the city area that well and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a reasonable hotel

im flying into JFK cuz it was the same price as a train with JetBlue...and im currently on the phone with NYU trying to ask them this same question

I'm an MN boy, so I have clue about NYC.

I haven't booked my flight yet, and I'm still looking into accommodations.
 
i know seriously all the hotels are like 400 dollars...i want one thats 200 dollars
 
can we stay in youth hostels? or are those only for people visiting the country.... cuz if we can those are muchhhh cheaper

the cheapset hotel i found so far was 88 dollars one in chinatown and the other in the bronx....idk if thats safe tho haha
 
i visited NYC a while ago and heir public transit system is quite good. I think as long as you stay somewhere on manhatten island, you should be okay
 
I did not receive an invite to NYU yet, but I am going to Columbia. The best place to stay IMO, is in Jersey City (Immediate west of Manhattan), because is safer. Go to google maps and click on "transit". It will display the transit stops, then right click somewhere around there and click on "places around here." Then, search for hotels. You will find many around there. I would stay within walking distance around the trains because it will go directly into manhattan. Otherwise, if you want to save some money, live somewhere further and take a bus to the train stop. I've heard you can also "name your price" on price line to get it down a little cheaper.

Of course, you can stay in manhattan. It will be expensive, but you don't have to spend so much time taking public transportation.

If are traveling from DC area, bus is your best bet because they are only around $10 one way.

You think driving would be really bad idea from MD.
 
Not a bad idea, but very expensive. The tolls alone would be 20-25 each way. Parking in downtown is 30-50 per day. You can find street parking, but it will drive you nuts. Driving in manhattan is not fun either.
 
Could you room with a current Dental student for the night? How would that work?
 
I asked them about staying with a student and unfortunately they don't have on campus housing for students so you would be on your own to find someone to stay with.

I looked into hotel 17 since I found out it is .7 miles from campus and there's a shuttle from La Guardia. I don't know about JFK though. Probably. Hotel 17 was 115 per night and the only negative is that you share a bathroom but it's not that big of a deal. It's kinda like living in a dorm but worth it if you want to avoid traffic. Good luck! I am staying at the Marcel! It's like a block away.
 
This might be crazy, I was thinking about getting up 3 am in the morning and drive to NYC on the day of my interview. I used to work night shifts at gas station.

I can't afford staying at a hotel overnight. I just don't have the money for it.
 
st. james hotel used to be pretty inexpensive. its close to times square without the big price tag.

still would need a bus/taxi to NYU though.

I am currently in cali but i pretty much grew up in new york city n i know d ins n outs of the 5 boroughs... manhatten wud b very expensive in terms of hotel n stuff , so ur best bet wud b to get a place in queens borough n take the subway which is lil cheaper.. jersey city wud b lil too far although not much but u dont wanna take path train or their NJ transit buses n take subway away from 42nd street...best bet is queens!u dont wanna drive coz of traffic n tolls... good luck 🙂
 
St. Marks hotel is an option.. or anywhere else near NYU (downtown campus) is prob a good bet. It's safe down there and there is a free shuttle bus to the dental school. The subway is also fairly close to NYU. For those who are from out- of- town and don't know NYC at all- my advice is stay on the east side of manhattan. Transportation is easy going in the north and south directions... but going east and west as an out- of- towner can be very tricky.
Once you go outside of manhattan public transportation can take a while.. at least 30 minutes (when you know what you're doing).
My advice is find a cheap hotel like the one I suggested or a hostel in manhattan.
For those planning on driving, read the parking garage signs very very carefully! (street parking is almost non-existent) but the parking garages themselves try to rip you off with some strange rates. There is a parking garage on 26th between 1st and 2nd and I know that they are honest and charge a flat rate of $24 a day (really really good deal in manhattan) AND right near the dental school.

I second that! u dont wanna switch from NJ transit to NYC transit! plus buses in NJ rob u with fares as compares to NYC daily pass which gives u more options and unlimited ride for d day or week or watever!

a single standard room was a little over 300 after tax....i think im gonna do the 17. its a shared hallway bathroom but its a short ride and not gonna make me have to take out a loan just for hotel housing 😛

Hey everyone, congrats on your interviews! I just got my first interview invite yesterday from NYU! 😀

Before booking a hotel I would recommend trying Priceline.com "Name your own price". I've been able to get hotels in different cities for less than half their listed price. It may take a few days to get a bid accepted but it sure beats paying $300/night or sharing a bathroom. The only problem with bidding for hotels is that you're never sure which hotel you will get. It looks like the best area to start your bidding on would be the Empire State Building Area or perhaps Chelsea or MSG areas.

If you look here before your bid http://biddingfortravel.yuku.com/forums/68/t/New-York-State-New-York-City.html you can get an idea of what prices are being accepted. It looks like a lot of people are getting 3 star and 4 star hotels for less than $150/night. Also, finding a friend who's interested in a day trip to NYC would be a good way to split the hotel price.

As for travel, if you live in an area served by megabus you can get really cheap rides to new york city if you don't mind spending the extra time on a bus. I don't know how long NYU interviews run but it looks like the bus leaves from Penn Station at 4:20PM every day.

i ended up booking hotel 17. 10 minute walk to campus+ only 115 a night i couldnt find anything better. i feel so much better about this now because i was really worried about the early morning manhattan traffic....

the only thing is what are you guys doing about check out? are you planning on checking out before the interview to be safe or playing it by ear and hoping to god you dont miss check out time after the interview is done?

i think i might check out before, but then i'll probably have to bring my duffel with all my stuff in it to the interview which definitely doesn't look professional :laugh:

the hotel staff will probably allow you to leave it in their possession even if you check out early. You could pick up your bags after your interview from the hotel. Last time I was in New York, I did the same thing and the hotel didnt even charge me for holding my stuff. A couple dollars in tip wouldnt hurt though.

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has an interview on September 24th. I've never been to NY before and I'm going all alone from CA. I'm getting there the 23rd and maaaaybe if someone else wants to try to figure out how to get around with me they could let me know. I also want to go site see after the interview if anyone's interested : )

Funny, I'll be there the same day for an interview at Columbia

I've been to NYC though and actually went up to see NYUCD's building. From what I can remember, it's farther uptown than NYU's undergrad and there's really no subway stop nearby. You might have to do some walking (unless you want to figure out the bus system, which I have not managed to do).
 
Well the 6 train stops really close by...ON 23RD STREEt and I believe a few short blocks from NYUCD...for more info and to simplify your travel pkans..check out MTA's subway map which will help you plan where to get a hotel..

Maybe I'm lazy but "a few short blocks" in NYC never turn out to be that short... somehow I always mis-budget my time getting to places 😳
 
hey for you guys who got an interview invite from nyu, when did you guys get an app complete email from them? I got one from them on aug 13th and still havent heard back from them....

I got the complete notification on the 13th as well.
 
i got the email saying my app is complete on aug 10th, and i got an email for an interview today
 
Is anyone going to be in New York on September 29th and September 30th?
I have NYU interview on the 30th, and Columbia interview on October 1st(so I will be checking out October 1st morning).
So I don't mind one person coming in on the 29th, and another person coming in on the 30th.

There is this Hotel Riverside Studio, west of Central Park, and it seems the minimum prices there are 120-ish. I know we don't know each other, but does anyone want to share the room, if saving money is a priority? I mean if you're paying $30 bucks to get into a hostel and share with 6 people, why not just pay bit more and be more comfortable? anyways, feel free to discuss/PM. BTW, I'm a guy.

OR, I found this Candy Hostel, west of Central Park as well. There is this Double Bed Private (Double Rooms, Double bed, with a shared bathroom). It is $46 per night. The thing is the person who reserves HAS to pay for two people, so everything has to be arranged with the second person.

Now I don't know if west side of central park is safe enough, so perhaps any of you who live in NY could give some help about that?

West of Central Park is pretty safe as long as you aren't too high up in the number of streets. Also since only 1,2 lines service the west side, getting to places (NYU) might be a hassle from there..you would have to change trains...or else get a taxi..

Hey Red, no seriously the 6 train stops pretty close by. i would say maybe a 5 minute walk from there...to NYUCD...but offcourse you would have to know the city a little better. So from 23rd street, you would walk two streets up to 25th and then maybe 2 avenues over...

6 train is the closest subway to NYU dental.
It lets you off on 23rd and park

Dental school is 24th and 1st

So you walk up 1 block and over 4 avenues (park to lex, lex to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to 1st)
If you walk like a new-yorker should take only 5-6 mins. 😀

anyway, in regards to the posts i've been seeing about subways, the closest subway station (the 6 train) is still about a 15 minute walk (if you walk quickly) from school. avenues in nyc are very long...

to the person that was wondering about the area "west of central park", this is the upper west side and it is very safe! as long as you stay somewhere under 125th street, it's totally fine. unless i am mistaken and you actually meant "central park west"... in that case, it is still extremely safe and it's just a residential street running all long central park.

i've been living in nyc for the last 10 years so i didn't have to book a hotel for my interview... i won't be much help for that, but if you guys have any questions about the city and nyucd, i will try to answer them! good luck 🙂

Heeyy if I'm staying around 40th and 2nd street will I be able to walk to the interview? (I can't remember what streets exactly they were but it was definitely in the 40s) Thank you!

yeah it's definitely doable (i assume you meant 40th and 2nd ave). a 16 block walk will probably take about 20-25 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. so just walk down 16 blocks, then walk over one avenue east. i would leave 30 minutes early, just in case! also, when i interviewed at nyucd, i arrived early and was interviewed early. it's kind of on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you can finish your interview early without having to wait around for everyone else and just relax.
