Hello, MS III here. I know this can be complex but which IM program, NYU or Mt. Sinai, has better/prestigious cardiology match outcomes? I can only choose one of these for 4th year elective and I would like to choose the one that will be better for my career goals. Also, if anyone knows, is one more competitive than the other? Thanks!

I was stuck between the two for the #1 slot on my rank list. Initially I focused purely on the cardiology match between the two programs.

Somehow I "saw the light" and realized I needed to be at a program where I felt I would get a stellar residency training and walk out more seasoned as a clinician than at other programs.

Once I matched into a program and started/settled in, I would THEN worry about fellowship (at both Sinai and NYU, you will match into a fellowship in the field of your choice. They both do very well in this regard).

My advice: figure out what type of residency program you want to be at (cush? hard work? diverse patient population?) and worry about the subtleties of fellowship match (between similarly-ranked programs) when the time comes.

(IMO Mt. Sinai is a fantastic program with a great group of residents and a very caring, hands-on PD... however, after comparing both housestaff programs with second-looks etc. I decided to go with NYU as it was more of what I was looking for).

oh, and another thing to keep in mind is to try and avoid over-planning, in essence, "locking" yourself into a 7-8 year-long career path earlier than you need to. Since college I was sure that I wanted to go into not just cardiology but interventional cardiology.

After just 6 months of internship, I'm still interested in doing cards (albeit not interventional but perhaps heart failure/critical care) but I'm also taking a closer look at a variety of non-cardiology career options.

advice duly noted..you're right i should not pick between 2 places based on cardiology match outcomes. i guess what i should be asking is which place is a better place to train. but i guess i can only find through second looks and such.
