I got accepted to NYU and USC. Both schools are great, but I do not know which has better reputation as dental school. Could you give me an advice? thanks ~

hmm...so lets see...you got to school, to gain reputation? or do you want to get the best education?!!why don't you research and see which one better fits your need and stop worrying about reputation!

I would think that reputation and best education would work hand in hand.

yeah, not mutually exclusive. i think it comes down to location between those two. do you want socal or nyc? pretty different places... and you'll come out of both w/ $400k in debt 😱

I was also accepted to USC and NYU. I ended up going with NYU because personally I feel it was a better fit for me. Both schools have there positives and negatives. I personally feel more comfortable with lecture style approach to learning over PBL. Even though both schools are extremely expensive I too am from NY and live close enough to NYU where I can commute and not worry about the cost of living in NYC. Hope that helps a little.

Personally, I would definitely go to NYU. Not that NYU is any better than USC or anything, but I prefer traditional lectures than 100% pbl and also I'm kinda sick of LA. I believe they're both great schools in terms of getting clinical experiences and you'll get your DDS no matter where you go. GL!🙂

Would you prefer to be lectured or learn at your own pace for $80k a year?

Simple - do you prefer blondes or brunettes ?

I personally would take NYU over USC...but that's just me...unless of course PBL is something you think you could work well with. Plus, why, if you have 2 acceptances..does your signature say you're retaking the DAT?

It really comes down to where you wanna stay. I would probably choose NYU though...just because of the pbl curriculum.

i personally would pick NYU over USC without any doubt.

I'm a current student (1st year) at USC and am enjoying the program thus far. The last class that took NBDE I had a class average of 88.5. Only one person didn't pass one section and that was tooth morphology by 1 point. That person has since passed that section. Just food for thought.

Feel free to contact me if you want any specifics or details.

My mother is friends with the dean of NYU dental and he even tells her that anywhere but NYU will be better. The dean is a graduate of UMDNJ.
If you are worried about reputation (I don't believe this should be a determining factor) then NYU is not the place.
Best of Luck,

Hmm. out of curiosity, are you basing this on an aversion to PBL, NBDE I avg score, pass rate, or etc ?

Based on other posts, I think it may be that someone wants to go to USC and is lessening the competition for the spot.🙂

Reputation is a tricky issue in dentistry. There are tons of schools that attract pretty good applicants yet are generally not well-known.

Both USC and NYU are recognizable names for the lay people. I for one think that NYU has a pretty good overall rep and is fairly well known. See the following thread:

so USC is mainly pbl, while NYU has traditional lectures?????

USC is PBL, with very few lectures.

I think it really depends on the person. I acutally know 2 people who previously worked for admissions at NYU and they both liked the school.

I worked for hubby/wife runned dental office. The dude graduated from NYU and his wife from USC. According to him, you don't have to run around scraping for patients before graduation, they come to you...students who attend USC have to look for their own patients (most of the students end up begging people to come in just so they can fullfill their requirements to graduate). My friend, also a recent USC graduate was also scrambling for patients in order to meet his requirements to graduate.

USC = pbl and pootang. Both are relatively easy.

USC has failing part II board scores. 70% for the class of 2006 and 75% is a pass 😱😱😱😱😱

Thats not good.

I love how people assume things about USC without even knowing about the program or any of the statistics!!!

Can anyone here who would pick PBL tell me if they have tried PBL? how is it that people who don't like people don't know what its about...It is like saying I hate pie when you have never had pie!!! tsgalloway is a student with me at USC and we both seem to love the program!!! So to those who are not in PBL and not at USC, please do not make assumptions on what the program is like. Everyone makes their own choices, and I also did have the option of going to NYU, but I am very close with USC and the PBL programs and I truely believe in the power of PBL, and I am a student of PBL.

It is unreasonable to Say "I would pick lecture over PBL, becuase I like lecture better" if you have not tried PBL. how can you compare the two when you have only experienced one!!!

It is however valid to say, that "I would pick lecture because it works for me, and I don't want to change my method of learning"

good luck to all, and "be carefull in chosing the resources of your facts!!!" Thats one thing you won't learn in Lecture based Learning!!!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As I do respect people who like PBL, your comment on how, "if you have not tried PBL. how can you compare the two when you have only experienced one" is invalid. Sometimes, you don't need to experience both things to make a sound decision on what's better. If that were the case, we'd all make mistakes all the time and learn from them. You can avoid pitfalls by avoiding a situation rather than doing it and then learning from it.

your right you don't need to experience the two to make a sound decision... thats completely valid...But people here just assume PBL is bad, without even reading up on the PBL pedagogy or knowing anything on how it works Someone posted "I wouldn't go to USC just because of PBL" without stating their reason or why!? it seems that they just heard it is bad, based on no facts...This is a common misconception in many things.

If you are the person accepts everything you hear, you might not the make the best decisions in your life, and it might even cost you in many ways. For me, it has always been about challenging what I hear, and finding the facts before I accept something...I think people like us, healthcare professionals, are not satisfied with what we hear until we can see proof of it...As dental professionals we will see many companies come and advertise their products, claiming they are the best, are we to believe what they say?? well the answer is obvious.

...It is not the decision itself that can hurt you final outcome, but the lack of correct information that will affect your decision and eventually the outcome.

I'm sure everyone agrees in order to make a sound decision, you will atleast need some information (maybe not experience per se), but some sort of knowledge.

For the people who are mixed in deciding between PBL and lecture, I believe it is better to ask (and listen to) someone who is actually experiencing and going through PBL, rather than a person Who has not...Thats seems the most logical to me!! right??

Then they are free to make a "wise decision" of their own!!

FIGHT ON!
good luck guys!!

There is a PBL and there is an “USC PBL”. The Harvard’s PBL was implemented to make students more “involved”. Not all major classes were/are PBL based. The USC’s PBL, in my opinion, is a letdown to a bulk of their students. In late 80 and early 90, USC’s graduates were very good in all aspects. And their results (NBI & II) showed that as well.

I mention in another post, ask majority of USC’s ten-year professors - which generation of young dentists is better, now or 12-15 years ago?

Good luck to you all.
👍

Well, I can tell that crap is horrible without tasting it. 100% PBL leaves you alone in the middle of an ocean. I personally need professors teaching me as opposed to "facilitators".

But in defense of USC I have to say that the clinic is still amazing.

I agree with you that a mix of both PBL and lecture is more effective, yes, and USC has already moved towards that...as we are seeing more lectures going on...This is why I say, people have the wrong information about USC. Not all major classes here are PBL. We still have anatomy classes, tooth morphology lectures. Resource sessions after every case to go over cases. lectures during our rotations, etc etc. Yet we still implement PBL.
