January 15th is drawing near and it's time to make a decision!! Well, at this point, I am down to 2 schools to chose from, since I missed the deposit deadlines for both Temple and Boston U. At this point, I am still waiting to hear from USC and have to put a deposit in at either NYU or Pitt. No contest there...I am anxious to leave PA, so that leaves NYU. I really liked NYU when I was there, but I heard something rather disturbing from a dentist who graduated from there. I do not know if this is true, and I find it hard to believe, but he claims that they over-accept students and then eliminate 20% of the accepted students by the end of the first year. Even though I am confident that I will do well, this is still somewhat disturbing. I understand that if the student's GPA is below a certain GPA, you are on academic proabation, etc, but can they deliberately eliminate the bottom 20% of the class??

I would also like any opinions on NYU from people who interviewed there. Did anyone chose NYU??

Thanks!! 😱

Regina,

I interviewed there in early November. That rumor is false. The students told me that NYU tries to help you as much as they can but since there is such a big student body you will get more people failing compared to a smaller class.

I was worried about the same thing. The only thing that I do not like is the high tuition. Its outragous!! 😱

I was talking to a student that went to NYU from my research lab, he says that the rumor is untrue HOWEVER they do accept more than they intend to graduate so if you are at the bottom of the class first year you might not make it to second. He also said it's pretty hard to kick out (so it was kinda mixed messages).
My research professor said the class is so large that they split it up to do clinics.... tough choices....

Your concern is unfounded. NYU does not automatically whack 20% of the incomming class. NYU takes a lot of students and some of those may be borderline candidates who cannot find the motivation to get through the rigors of dental school. Therefore, on a historical basis, a certain percentage of each NYU entering class class (@20%..???) apparently does not complete the program. However, no percentage of each entering class is targeted for elimination.

Hi Regina330,
Can you tell me how much $ Temple wanted to hold a seat in their class?

Hey Everyone!!

Thanks for your replies! I did not think that sounded legitimate either.

As for the Temple deposit, it is $750 initially and another $750 in April.

Hello Regina,
I interviewed at NYU and was impressed by their school. I know some of the students there and they seem to like the school. NYU will probably be where I choose to go, so I might see you there.

Alfonso,

I see you are from Ca...where in Ca? I will definitely see you at NYU if I don't get the USC acceptance before the second deposit is due at NYU. I really liked NYU too, but I loved southern cal.

Good luck and maybe I'll see you in MYC!! 🙂

Hey Regina,
I'm from northern CA, the SF Bay Area. I guess you from SoCA huh? Well, I hope you get into USC, but if you don't I'll probably see you in NYU. You planning on staying in the dorm or renting an apartment?

alfonso,

I am from PA and loved so cal when I visited. As for NYU, I think it might be easier if I get university housing for the first year, until I get accustomed to the city. What do you plan on doing? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I'm confused! So, the bottom of the class at NYU who don't make it to the second year or graduating. Then, what do they do? Can they repeat what they flunk? Or they just get kicked out? Please response... Thanks

Usually the people who fail will come back and repeat the year. They will eventually graduate (unless they fail again), it just wont be in 4 years.
