This is my second year of application and after four interviews, I am still getting rejection from dental school. I was a pre-med before but now very decisive on dentistry. GPA is 3.4 and DAT 21. What's wrong?

did you apply early? and did you shadow a dentist for longer than 100 hours? and did you give a good explanation on why you want to be a dentist instead of a doctor?

Maybe you accidentally checked the felony conviction box. Did you have a really bad downward trend or something?

I applied back in Oct 2005, I been shadowing for a dentist for more than a year already. I actually has gotten a letter from Tuft stating that being a pre-med has affected my chances of getting in. AHHHHHHHH

umm, well if they interviewed you, maybe you did something wrong at the interviews. were you attractive enough? did you wear a great suit? you can post your pic on the picture thread and we'll critique your appearance.

i sincerely wish you luck with this.

????that's crazy! Those are pretty good stats to be rejected from NYU. hmmmm did you stress tooo much on being a premed?
I used to be premed too long time ago but I never mentioned it during my interviews and nor did they. Did you apply to med schools this cycle at the same time?

need more info..whats your overall, science anc bcp gpa? and your full dat scores..aa,ts and pat. also try to work on your interviewing skills..i will go out on a limb and guess you didnt do a great job convincing your interviewer that you deserve a spot in their school.

This is my fourth interview already. I thought that I did great this time at the interview compared to my Tuft's interview. I thought honesty count so I did mentioned that I was a pre-med. Ah, now that I am depress that i have to wait ANOTHER year. Also The DAT was taken on 09/04, could I still use that for the 07 applicaton cycle?

GPA 3.37 Science 3.2

DAT scores usually go stale after 2 years... I'd e-mail the schools you're interested in about this specifically. And maybe call up the school and ask personally what would make you a better candidate... 'cause your numbers are pretty nice. Maybe more dental experience was needed???

Dental Experience? I have been shadowing at a local Dentist office since September 2004. Now I feel like that I actually have to look for a job in a dental office or get some sort of dental degree in order to get in.

oof.. That's craziness. Not the experience then. Def call the offices to see what the deal is... People have told stories of getting specific advice on their applications before by just calling...

Since they were taken in August 2004 they will still be good for next cycle..however after that I think they will expire.
Anyone know if some schools have a 3 year shelf life for DAT's?

hmm..now i'm scared about my chances! well, did you have any extracurriculars, honors & achievements? If you don't, and with your outstanding DAT scores but mediocre GPA, the adcoms might have thought you're too lazy to boost your GPA in school??? If that's not the case, maybe your looks is the problem...j/k

those stats are pretty solid, so i think it may be something else. applying in october is a bit late though..

i say you call the schools and ask them the reason for your rejection

What made you switch from med to dental? Maybe you are lacking conviction in your interview.

You have a solid gpa/dat..so maybe you need to work on your interviewing skills..maybe do some mock interviews. You probably didn't convey how passionate you are about dentistry or XYZ school during your interviews. The mock interviews helped maybe you should give it a try. good luck!

You applied in Oct? That's pretty late, when you take into account that it takes another 2-3 wks for your app to get processed by AADSAS. If you plan on applying this year, then I wouldn't waste any time and send it in asap!

Your stats are pretty solid. Your personal statement must be decent as well, cause you got 4 interviews. Have you thought about updating it, to reflect your determination in re applying for a 3rd time? Sounds like you have plenty of shadowing experience as well. Since you got to the interview, and then didn't get an acceptance, I'd have to say that maybe your interviewing skills need some work. Like you, I was pre med as well, but that was a long while back..and I would stay away from that topic in your statement if possible, and definitely don't bring it up yourself on an interview. On one of my interviews the interviewer brought it up, and tried to make me say that I was only going the dental route because the med school thing didn't work out. I had to be quite forceful, and defend myself..and in time the interviewer accepted it. Don't feel guilty for having tried medical first, but when it comes to interviewing, have some idea of what you'd like to say before hand. You don't want to be caught off guard, and come off half hearted about dentistry.

I admire your determination, this is not an easy process to endure even once, and you've already gone through it twice and thinking to try for a third time. I wish you luck. :luck:
