Hello everybody!
I am feeling very fortunate to be down to my final two choices: NYU and Johns Hopkins. Would love to hear thoughts from the crowd.
I am uncertain about precisely which specialty I am interested in - other than knowing I want to have some surgery days and some clinic days. To me, that means urology, ENT, and ophthalmology are probably at the top of my list (but very receptive to change). 15 years down the road, I don't know a whole lot about what I want to do, but I like teaching/tutoring and research, so academic medicine seems like a likely landing spot for me. I'm from the midwest, so location is a wash. Although my parents' incomes bar me from qualifying for any need-based aid, I am responsible for covering the costs of medical school on my own!
NYU (tuition-free, ~$35k/year)
Pros:
Cons:
Hopkins (full cost of attendance, $105k/year)
Pros:
Cons:
To me, the difference in cost is really, really hard to ignore as I'm paying for school I'm on my own and I'm one year out of college. But, I am curious if anybody can rationalize the decision to go back to Baltimore and Hopkins. Thanks so much!

NYU (tuition-free, ~$35k/year)
Pros:
- Free tuition, duh
- In New York City
- Have the ability to finish in three years
- Student body seems super cohesive and friendly
- Very impressive match list
- If I decide to go into something pretty competitive (like ortho), can take a research year and I'll still be done in only four years
Cons:
- Between the three year program and being in NYC, I am a tad worried that things are going to feel like they're moving a million miles an hour and I'll become an afterthought
- Don't think there's electives in the first year
- Doesn't seem to be as much early clinical integration as there is at Hopkins
- Prestige is not as noteworthy as Hopkins (although certainly nothing to look down on)
- AOA
Hopkins (full cost of attendance, $105k/year)
Pros:
- My undergrad, I love Baltimore
- Arguably the biggest name in all of medicine
- Early clinical integration through the longitudinal ambulatory clerkship
- Likely more research opportunities (although feel like clinical research is probably comparable)
- Very impressive match list that has wide geographic variety
Cons:
- COST!!!! (already exhausted my negotiation appeal with Hopkins FinAid so this number isn't changing)
- Don't get to see somewhere new, especially when I'm relatively young
- Four years at a minimum, five with a research year
- Smaller, less vibrant city than NYC
- Iffy feedback on the current curriculum and uncertain what the future curriculum and grading will look like
To me, the difference in cost is really, really hard to ignore as I'm paying for school I'm on my own and I'm one year out of college. But, I am curious if anybody can rationalize the decision to go back to Baltimore and Hopkins. Thanks so much!
