NYU vs. HOWARD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd pick NYU but I don't know much about Howard. What did you like/dislike about each school when you interviewed?

NYU. The only thing that Howard has over NYU is cost. NYU has the prestige, location, facilities, diversity, reputation, and prestige. The only thing I know about Howard is that it's a historically black university.

I have a verrry similar decision to make. I've talked to friends and family friends that are dentists and they all say the same: Go to the cheaper place.

$400k(NYU tuition ~250k plus est living expenses from NYU website) vs $250k(howard tuition ~150k plus est living expenses from HU Website)...$400k is a huge amount to re-pay. I think the key is to get the most of your education wherever you go. Learn as much as you can and pass your board exams.

Maybe a grad or practicing dentist can correct me but I've been told what you need to learn about real world dentistry, you learn from courses/seminars you take after graduation. Dental school give you the basis but a lot of it is really outdated. Save the money for better education after you graduate.

Is it common for Caucasian's to apply to Howard?

They're a very multicultural school. I had an interview at howard and there were 3 asians, 3 hispanic, 3 caucasian and 3 african american applicants.

check out the facebook group for the entering class...

NYU is terrible. It's expensive as all hell and they cut from their D1/D2 class. Go to Howard.

Yup. Huge cuts. Gotta trim the fat on all that excess tuition they would be taking in.

Sigh...

If I were you, I'd go to Howard to save a huge amount of money.
Remember this, every 1 dollar you spend, you have to pay 3-4 dollars back. :meanie:Plus at Howard, you can obtain a DDS/MBA joint degree. At NYU, you are just a number. 😀

my wife and i are caucasian and both applied.

howard is a little more diverse than you'd think. in 09, howard's class of 80 was 50% black and had 15 caucasians. in contrast, meharry accepted 2 whites in a class of 50.

OP, NYU.

An MBA from Howard? I'd say that's like an oxymoron.
You're only a number if you let yourself be a number; if you use those social skills that they expect you to have, I guarantee your professors will know you.

Well i just got my acceptance from Howard and im waitlisted in NYU so i guess my decision was made for me 😀 ... but from what i have gathered throughout my volunteer hours and shadowing of over 5+ dentists ... most ppl dont know where their dentist went to school when they walk in for a general check up... i plan on saving my money for my specialization which i think is more important than the DDS ... plz do correct me if i am wrong.

Thanks again everyone

I've already been accepted into NYU and just got an acceptance into Howard today. I really don't know which shchool to pick.

I'm leaning more towards howard b/c i live in Northern VA which is 15 miles from the school, CHEAPER, Smaller class(so greater chance of being in top percent for specialization), non-competitive envirnoment. The only thing holding me back is the stigma of graduating for Howard. It is not as well respected as other dental schools and noncomparable to NYU. Oh and yea, I heard the faculty SUCKSSS from many dental students.

Any input from current students would be great

Real classy, I wonder if that's the reason why they gave you a chance at making something of your wonderful life, a little humility might be in order else give up that spot to someone more deserving...

How does this make sense? If you're in a class of 50, only 5 people get to be in the top 10%. If you're in a class of 250, there are 25 people in the top 10%. I don't recommend it, but if you must play the numbers game when making your decision, at least use the right numbers!

Hello Friends,

I am an international dentist and would like to know, if howard ever had an international dentist program?
Also, is it okay to go to school before interview to meet the old students?

one thing dental school has taught me is humility. Go to Howard. You will have a great education and the "respect" (whatever that means). don't think going to Howard will allow one to easily specialize. It will still require plenty of effort on the individual. I go to NYU btw.

I got into BU. Howard was and still is one of my top choices. I hope they take me. My reasoning is based primarily on cost. DONT PAY MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO IF A CHOICE. At the end of the day a dentist is a dentist. If you choose Howard and regret it when your out at least you won't be in as much debt as you would be after NYU. If you do choose Howard & your really upset about your choice at the end of the day, just buy a NYU bumper sticker (it will be a lot cheaper that going there).

Why would they do that?

I see you're at NYU, so I'm assuming you know what you're talking about, but it makes no sense to me.

That was sarcasm. Meaning, why would they want to cut you, and lose all of that tuition?

This rumor will be around for quite awhile, I see.

Ah, sorry! I never tell when someone is being sarcastic over the internet! Thanks for clearing that up! 😛

Offcourse specialization is not guaranteed ... what is? You waking up tomorrow from bed is not guaranteed .... but if you put ur mind to it and work hard then ull get it ... i know alot of dentists that just recently specialized and trust me there not smarter than you and me, they just gave it there all ... so thats my plan 👍

I want to apologize if I've offended any body hear. I'm very happy and feel blessed to have given an opportunity like this. By saying the faculty "sucks" I meant that from my experience With fellow dental students the faculty isn't much helpful, but I understand that every dental school has a flaw. After doing my research I'm thinking of going to Howard, saving about 200k is alot of money and at the end of the day we all are dentist .

if you do go to nyu...

and the rumors are true, you can call help me howard... he will set things straight

ps its a northeast thing

i understand everyone stresses over the cost of dental school and say that a dental school education is a dental school education... but i feel one thing that people seem to overlook is the quality... it's kind of how 2 people raised in 2 different neighborhoods can end up being 2 totally different people... granted other variables play in effect...

but i feel people should look more into is the quality of the education... if you're able to attend a school with newer technology, more funding in research and innovations, then it can truly help you be ahead... if you look at the medical field.. things are constantly being improved and changed to become more efficient... the overall goal is the quickest way to eliminate pain as well as reduce the time it takes to do that... hence why the field is constantly evolving around this... so if you are able to attend a school where you can learn these, it will set you further ahead of the rest... granted it may not be my much... but something is better than nothing...

that's my two cents.

I know someone a white guy who graduated from Howard who had friends who graduated from more prestigious universities. All of these people ended up having successful private practices.(However, the howard graduate had less debt) Moral of the story is the school doesn't matter much.

I know a white guy named Oscar Pistorius who has no legs who had friends who did have legs. All of these people ended up having successful track careers. (However the guy with no legs had to expend less energy around the track) Moral of the story is that legs don't matter much in becoming an olympic sprinter.

NYU and Howard will provide you with dramatically different experiences even if you graduate with the same degree. The difference comes down to whether you feel the social experience at NYU is worth 200k. Some people might not think it matters, but it might mean all the difference for lets say a white female from orange county california.

How the fluck do u knw are you spreading that rumor we all heard but u were the only one who repeated it without proof
