NYU vs. Temple University Which would you go to?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In terms of NYC, you gotta remember that yes, you'll get to live in Manhattan (which to some is a plus), but while you do, you will be a dental student trying to focus on studying. And well, Manhattan is full of distractions. Not to mention that it is very expensive to take advantage of any of these distractions, and it really sucks if you're a poor student who cant afford these distractions.

Ok, I am NYU D1, I got into Case, NYU, Marquette, Creighton, and I was interviewed by UCSF, San antonio, Colorado, Nova, UMDNJ and Buffalo,

Honestly NYU was the best of them all for reasons that fill up the page if I wanted to just simply list them.

NOT.

I didn't apply to the two schools that you named, but if I did, and if they both had accepted me I'd pick NYU. Location, location, location.

Disclaimer: I do know a guy going there from my undergrad, and he said it's really tough there, grade wise.

Geniuses among geniuses....you're just average!!!

Cheers.

I say NYU for sure. I think its a fantastic school.
Where is all this info about NYU students not getting enough clinical experience coming from? That's ridiculous. Its one of the biggest cities in the world and patients flock to the school. You get to do a wide variety of procedures, and some really cool ones (like CADCAM inlays and onlays) which other schools just don't have the technology, resources, or even faculty experience and know-how to do. You get lots of experience there.
And no, students are not responsible for making their patients pay. Believe me you don't want that responsibility on top of practicing your skills on patients. Isn't that why you hire an office manager anyway? 😀

bump

curious to get more updated opinions on both schools ( assuming OOS to both).

I guess I could shine in on this subject as I was accepted to both at nearly the same time.

I chose Temple over pretty much 4 things.

1) Its cheaper to live, NYC is super expensive. I have a house this coming year with 5 others for $300/p/m with my own room. Tuition cost is nearly the same so I won't comment there.

2) Temple's clinicals are renowned for preparing students for real world dentistry, (no GPR necessary for me I hope).

3) I enjoyed my time in Philly and NYC. I just know that being a student in NYC will put me in huge debt for just having fun (bars, concerts, etc.) And I do plan on taking a train to NYC sometime during my years at Temple just to experience it.

4) Class size. Temple is nearly 1/3 the size and I found that a lot of the students were friendly and seemed like a good group. At NYU I got the vibe that ~300 kids are going in different directions = hard to get good friends.

Just my 2 cents.

because....

.....Because i am close to finishing my 3rd year at temple and here is approximately what i've done. About 65 extractions including surgical extractions, 3rd molars and extractions on pediatric patients while administering N2O, 1 frenectomy, 2 alveolarplasties. Assisted classmates with horizontally impacted 3rds, biopsys, etc.. 5 root canals 2 anteriors, 2 premolars and 1 molar. Many, many pulpotomies. Working on 4 arches of removable, have only delivered 1. About 30 quadrants of S/RP. At least 45 cavities maby more class I - class V. Have several patients in different stages of implant treatment, from making surgical guides to assisting with placement to ultimately restoring with implant crowns. I have only delivered 2 crowns so far. Thats all that comes to mind. I don't know if thats a lot compared to other d schools, but i've definitely learned a lot.

I'd say i'm about on average with the majority of my classmates. Some of them have done more and some have done less.

thanks mooredge....how is the 3d year at nyu?
