I would go to the school with an OMFS department.Humbled to have two acceptances to dental school this cycle so far, after not getting in anywhere last cycle. Im very interested in OMFS. Because of my living situation, CoA will be essentially the same between the two. My pros and cons are mostly based on what I understand each school offers for OMFS. If anyone has more insight i would love to hear it.
NYU pros:
- has an actual OMFS department, useful for research, networking, getting LoR, and volunteering at the department
- multiple hospitals in the NYC area to extern at like NYU itself, Cornell, Columbia, and others
- has an OMFS honors society D4 and apparently all of the people in the honors society match to OMFS
- NYU Bellevue OMFS residency seems to have a history of taking NYU dental grads from what Ive seen. Not sure if this is a coincidence but seems worth noting.
NYU cons:
- no significant time off to study for CBSE
- limited time off for externships. Will probably only get to do 4 weeks of externship total, however I choose to split that up
- more students (375) may make it harder to be in a top percentile of the class
Touro pros:
- Smaller class size may make it easier to be in top percentile of rank? not sure
- multiple months off summer after D1. Could be perfect for studying for the CBSE and taking it in August
Touro cons:
- no OMFS faculty or program at the school. Will make getting OMFS LoR difficult, and wont be able to network with faculty
- Location makes it more difficult to extern. If I go to NYU, living in NYC I could extern at any of the hospitals in the city from where I live.
- would have to buy a car to get around, increasing the CoA to be slightly more than NYU, in my particular situation
