NYU vs. Western

Hi All,

I am a CA resident having trouble deciding whether to attend NYU or Western next year. Please let me decide and weigh in on the polls. Thank you so much!

I was debating between Michigan and Western for quite a while. I'm from Cali too. In the end I chose Michigan - I didn't want to gamble so much money and four years of my life on a new school just to be closer to home. NYC rocks!! Go to NYU!

I personally choose NYU over Western because I don't know what exactly Western is going to offer for next four years! But I think at the end of the day it is your decision!

I vote for NYU! I really liked the city and school! I also have friends who go to NYU and they are happy there! Good luck on your decision.

With this economy, many people are going back to school. As long as tuition is where it is and the number of applicants remain high, western should be able to build no problem.

80%+ says NYU is a better pick but if you still hesitate then I guess you should consider Western because you know better than anyone else which one is a better choice for you! I am from Cali and I picked NYU over USC. I gave my deposit couple of days ago to NYU becuase I believe NYU is a right investment for me.

If you have not mailed your deposit yet, I recommend to send money order because by Jan. 15th schools should have cashed the check so you should leave some time to cash your check!

While NYU is clearly a back-up school for many of the students, it is still better than Western.

I voted for Western because you have a smaller class size, won't have a huge loan, and will get to see way more patients.

If you feel you will be happy at Western then go for it! I think every school has its pros and cons! There are always polarized views about different schools especially schools like NYU and USC with large number of students and higher tuition...But it is your decision and you know better than anyone else which one is a better choice for you! I had couple of friends who were accepted to USC in 2007 and it was around the time that many students could not graduate on-time and there were negative feedback posted with regard to USC on the forum, but they took the risk and they chose USC and actually they are happy there and they say it is getting better at USC! It is true that going to western is risky but who knows maybe it becomes one of the great dental schools in California and obviously you can become a part of first generation of dentists who graduate from Western! The good news is you become DDS in four years no matter where you go and you just need to pick the best fit for you now...Any way, good luck on your decision and keep us posted about your final decision 👍

USC is indeed changing things around. If you're on HPSP or any other scholarship, USC would be a good choice. As for NYU and Western - I was accepted at both but have decided not to attend either of them. For me, living in New York is an issue because one, it is super expensive, two, an expensive apartment is still a craphole, and three, the weather is horrible. Everything else about NYU is superior to Western no doubt. Western doesn't even have a dental building and their sim lab is goign to be in a warehouse down the street because of construction delays. They have like 8 faculty members and the rest are DO doctors teaching anatomy, biochem etc. I'd HATE to take classes combined with DMD and DO students - imagine how large the class will be on day 1 ...350 students? HOwever, Western does put all their lectures online so I can imagine that being useful. NYU was probably the last resort for californai residents, but now it seems it is Western
