Hello dear SDN users,

I was fortunate to receive an acceptance at NYU, which is my top choice.
Accordingly, I just want to ask some questions and tips from NYU students or alumni in this forum.

1. Where does the dental students reside in? What is the most common area?
2. What is the rough estimate for monthly living expenses?
3. Where can I find roommates for the room? (I am international student so I heard that it is hard for me to get a rent for myself..)
4. Any preperation do you guys suggest before the start of the academic year?
5. How is your experiences at NYU so far?

Any comments are also welcomed and thanks so much in advance🙂

I will also be attending NYU in the fall of next year!

Regarding finding a roommate, most people prefer to room with other students, so you can probably find a roommate through the NYU Class of 2020 Facebook group. Also, most reside in the neighborhood of NYU or around it (it gets a lot cheaper if you're in the Lower East Village, just 20 blocks South of NYU). Other areas such as Astoria (in Queens) is significantly cheaper, and there are other parts in Brooklyn that are also very cheap, but the issue there is that the commute can sometimes take a while which is why most decide to pay more but avoid being late. Rent in the immediate area will run you at about $2,000 at the lowest, but check online, I am sure you can find accurate rental rates.

I have a couple of mutual friends at NYU, and they really love it there - so I am also very excited to be attending!!!

I want to stay close to the campus, so I am currently looking into apartments near campus (the three big ones..)..
So even if I split the rent with my roommate, it will still cause me approx. $2000??
Also, how is approx. living expenses excluding rent fee?

1. There is Stuy town, waterside, peter cooper, other apartments, walk ups. Most of students live in the neighborhood.
2. It really depends on your housing and your expectation of quality of life. It can range from $500 to whatever, excluding housing.
3. You need a co-signer that must qualify if you need to rent yourself. Waterside plaza let you in with 2 months rent prepaid if you are NYUCD student. Or go to Facebook page.
4. Just enjoy like it is your last summer (it is indeed your last break). Don't even try to study ahead.
5. There is a lot of rumors that NYU is very stressful and that NYU kicks students out. Partially true. NYU is very stressful if you want to specialize. It is not the best school if you plan to specialize after dental school because almost all classes are graded ABCF and students are ranked every academic year based on their GPA. It is doable to pass (get C) in the classes but to get 4.0 it gets really stressful because every single course is graded.
About NYU kicking students out. There are always people that do not study and enjoy the fact that they are going to be a dentist in the future. Unfortunately, in dental school you need to give some effort even just to pass. If you don't and fail multiple major courses, you are either remediating, repeating the whole academic year or kicked out of the school. The decision is made by the dean. Since there is about 400 students in each class, there are much more students getting kicked out of the school than other schools. But if you think as percent wise, it is about the same.
There are few faculties that are sincerely taking care of the students and there are many faculties that are in the school for their own career, they are some that use students for building their career. In general faculties are bad. In the clinics, student dentists must fulfill CEE (points equivalent to money) in addition to requirements. So basically you are paying tuition and working for the school and make certain amount of money but you need to fulfill your clinic requirements. It trains you in ahead to become competitive dentist but... it is stressful.
