Hey guys, I'm still just a sophmore, but I plan on taking the DAT this coming summer. The way my schedule will work out is that I can take O-chem 2 during the summer. But I also plan on taking the DAT at the end of summer, so I can study for longer but at a slower pace. I'm hoping to study for2-3 months but only like 3 hrs. a day with weekends off, since I also work full time. Do you guys think this will be a strong strategy? How can I improve it?

SaltyDoo,

i'd say that it highly depends on the type of the student you are. i took orgo 2 over one summer and we had class for 2 hours every day and 16+ hours of lab each week. it was hot/humid and it was very hard to motivate myself to sit down and study organic chem (of all subjects) when it was a cool summer's afternoon and all my friends were out enjoying themselves. not to mention stydying those days that it was so hot that my brain would become totally non-functional. plus it was the time that i should have taken off after studying for 9 months and getting ready for another.

for me, orgo is a subject that i have to put in some extra time to understand. summer classes are way too fast paced for that subject; although some ppl actually prefer this. again it depends on you.

add to all of this, studying for DAT which needs lots of motivation and is time consuming enough. you are only a sophomore, i suggest you take the time this summer to study for the DAT, take orgo 2 in the fall and then take an easier load in the spring to really study the DAT the way it deserves. this is what i should have done!

good luck to you.

SaltyDoo,

I just did something very similar this past summer. I took Orgo 2 with lab, also took cell bio, worked half-time, studied for the DAT's and took them at the end of August. I thought it was very do-able. I took a 13 week summer orgo-2 class and not the 4.5 week one. Even if you do take the short Orgo class, you have all that other time to study for the DAT's without having class! Just be organized with your time and make sure to DEFINATELY treat studying for the DAT's like studying for a class daily, and you'll do great!

- Good Luck

I am currently enrolled in O-chem 2, but took the DAT over the summer. I self-studied the ochem 2 material and scored a 25 in that section (best score). I would say if you did excellent in Ochem 1, then you can hold off ochem 2 until after the test, and spend the summer studying for the entire DAT instead of attending class (too many lab hours)

Just another alternative.

BTW, I really dont need to study for Ochem 2 this semester, people in my class think i am a born genious.

Does this mean that the material stressed in the DAT is from Orgo I??

Questions in Organic Chemistry section on DAT are VERY basic.
You could do quite well without taking the second semester of Orgo. If you did well on Org I, and have solid foundation, all you need to study is a little bit of nomenclatures and some basic reactions.
