This past semester, I took Biochem, Biochem Lab, and O-chem I. (I know, I know, O-chem is probably a prerequisite at your school, but not here. A TON of people take both at the same time during their sophomore year here. So don't call me a troll 😀 )

I got a B in O-chem, a B+ in biochem lab, and an A in biochem. These B's are my first in college, and my lowest grades yet. But after looking through threads and nearly getting a C+ in o-chem, I'm not complaining. My only question is this:

I've heard that if you get a less-than-stellar performance in O-chem 1, you can make up for it and show med schools you understand organic chemistry by getting an A in O-chem II, getting a high MCAT score, and doing well in "higher-level" classes...like biochem.

Will med schools not take my good performance in biochem seriously because I took it at the same time as O-chem? Will they discount it because I got a B+ in biochem lab? Also, what happens if you don't get an A in o-chem II, but an A-? Are the med schools not convinced?

surely one random B in an otherwise solid transcript + good MCAT never hurt anybody.

"the med schools" say wtf, you're overthinking this

I got a 2.4 in my second quarter of organic chemistry. I did fine first and third quarter, and this year I tutor multiple people on the subject. No one cares if everything else looks good. Besides, you can have several Bs and still get into the top tier schools if your application looks good overall.

Wow Congrats! A in biochem, thats terrific. Biochem at my university is extremely difficult... the undergraduate portion is taught by non other than a medical school professor so you could imagine.

You'll be fine if you do better in organic - first quarter/semester you start to get the hang of studying for tests etc. so if you're really motivated, theres no way you cannot do well in ochem - II

I wouldn't worry about anything other than redeeming yourself for yourself.

I got a B- in my Chemistry lab (I had nooo idea I wanted to do medicine back then), but when I took O-chem lab, I worked my butt off and got an A+. This was really for my own redemption though.

I don't think it has hurt me (at least it has not in any ways that I care about anymore)

It's funny how often these threads are made... a sticky of some sort should be made about this sort of stuff.
