Hi all,

I'm pretty new around here, and so I just have a question about whether or not two classes of mine would count towards my BCPM GPA. I've been an O.Chem TA and at my college, I get credit for it on my transcript and the class is listed as "CHM 4940 - Supervised Teaching" under the Chemistry department. The other class is a research course I get credit for, it is not under a Biology/Chemistry/Physics/Math department, but it is under the Biomedical Sciences department. The course is called BMS4905 - Medical Sciences Senior Research.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Both will be BCPM.

Do you really get letter grades for research and being a TA?

Hi guys, sorry for bringing back an old thread. However, regarding the research class again, would any research class count? For example, at my school, as I stated before, there is one called BMS4905, but there are other 4905 courses that count as research classes as well, just under different departments. Ex: ZOO4905 is "Individual Studies in Zoology", would that be BCPM too? I find it difficult to classify my courses haha. Thanks for your time, appreciate responses. 🙂

how do you think med schools look at A's from being a TA & doing research?
i think it's very rare (from what i've seen) for people to get anything less than A-'s in those two "classes" and i was wondering if they would think you're just trying to boost your gpa

Doing research for a grade is hardly a gpa booster. It takes a large time commitment and if you wanted to boost your gpa there are certainly easier ways.

If I got anything other than an "A", I would interpret this as a request to leave the lab.

haha! one of my friends actually got a B+ in his lab and I was very surprised

so you're saying you don't think they'll look at research as a GPA booster? Yes, I completely agree with you that research is a lot of time commitment but I feel like if you put into the time and effort, you will get an A.

I plan to TA Organic Chem for the fall semester. Looks good on your app to know that you can relate to certain subjects more. I think it looks better than being a tutor but that's just what I think.

This is true for nearly every single undergrad class you can take...so.. 😕

haha yes that is quite true but i meant that there are no midterms/quizzes/finals for research classes (except maybe a 20+ page research paper haha) and even if you do very well in science classes, if you're not the top 20% or so, you might not get an A in the class
