I plan on taking my OATs this coming summer, however I was unsure whether to take it or not. I'm recently coming off completing all of my pre-requisites for science, and as all the material is fresh in my head, I figured I might as well take the OAT ASAP.

I'm graduating two years from now, and I was wondering if my OATs would expire by the time I apply to Optometry schools.

Thanks for your answers.

it depends on the school. check with schools you're interested in. i think its 3 yrs for osu, most of the northeastern schools will take oats 2yrs old max. good luck.

Looks like you will be safe.

You take it Sept 09, apply in Sept 10 for fall 2011.
If you don't get in first try, you reapply in Sept 2011, and you're still under the 2 year mark.

Thanks for the info guys.
Is September the earliest you can apply? I was originally planning on taking it mid-summer, and of course I want the option to apply twice like you suggested, however if September is the earliest, then it wouldn't work out.

If that is the case, than I will definitely consider taking it in September.

since optomcas (centralized application center) is starting this summer i don't think anyone is really sure if some schools application start times will change. i think if u take it this summer you're good for two cycles entering 2010 and 2011. again, checking with your schools or optomcas is best. early is usually good.

what about if you flunk out of an optometry school during your first or second year. You then decide apply to another optometry school as a transfer student, would they ask you to retake your OAT's if its been over two years since you've taken it initially to get into optometry school?

Probably not.

If you flunk out, I don't think your OAT score expiration date would be your biggest problem. I'm not sure it'd be worth the application fees to bother...
