somehow i have this feeling that ob residency is easier than surg. not only that it's one year less, but i might be biased because of seeing them have a night float system and the surg interns having to sit there on call after a long day. what do you all think?
also anyone know about ob fellowships (mfm, gyn-onc) vs. surg ones (critical care, surg onc, etc)?

What does delivering infants have to do with hemicolectomies? Do not compare these fields.

As far as concerning "easy" its still residency buddy.

OB is painful no matter what. Those guys/gals work hard, there's no denying that. A lot of the surgery programs across the nation have gone to the nightfloat system (which is still painful) or at least go home early post-call so that's comparing apples to apples.

There fellowships are almost all 3 years long while ours are usually 2. That puts us both at 7 years of residency/fellowship.

I'm not sure why we're trying to figure out who works harder anyway??? Surgery is MUCH easier than OB/Gyn for me cuz I like it so much more.

Valid points above.

Ob-Gyn and General Surgery are fairly different in scope and practice. Not all Ob-Gyn residencies have night floats and some General Surgery programs do - its a program difference, not a speciality-based one.

In no way would I say Ob-Gyn is easier - these residents work very hard and have very busy call nights.

The choice should be based on your interest.

Yeah i totally agree it should be (and will be) based on interest. i still have to do more rotations to decide on that for sure though so was trying to figure out other things that don't matter as much but were things that came to mind. thanks for your responses.
