Hello all and CONGRATS to everyone that matched today!! That's awesome. Well I have the fortunate task of scrambling tomorrow. I see that there are FIVE whole OB spot open for tomorrow. So my question is...how do you make yourself GREAT so you have a chance at one of the spots and if you don't get one what's the next best thing to do? I heard doing a preliminary surgery year was great to help for next year. Do you know anything about this? I'm a DO student so I was also thinking about a Transition Year also.

Not really sad or devastated about having to scramble. I trust that God is going to work this all out...I just want to know how to tackle this beast tomorrow without getting frustrated with it all.

Also I've found OB programs with preliminary years...are these offered in the scramble tomorrow or should I contact the programs and see if they still have the Prelim OB positions open? not really sure how that works. I've heard that they post the Prelim Sur spots on the unfilled list but not the Prelim OB spots. Any help with this will be GREATLY appreciated. You can respond here or PM...doesn't matter. Thanks in advance for any help. I hope someone answers. 🙂

in the same boat...did not match. how did you find the ob prelim listings, as it seems confusing which are just prelim. and i'm being advised fam med instead of surg prelim. any thoughts?

Only try to scramble for family med IF you think you want to do family med as a career....or at least think that you will be willing to complete a family med residency. If you do it for only one year while knowing that you will plan on reapplying for OB next year, you leave a gaping hole in that program. If you think that you only want to do OB, then try to scramble into a surgery or a medicine prelim.

Go to the FRIEDA website. And under the last tab (Optional criteria) it's a spot where you can tell them to search only programs with Prelim OB positions.

Do these Prelim OB positions fill very quickly? I'm trying to devise a plan of attack tomorrow LOL. I don't want to miss step. I'm assuming with so many people scrambling tomorrow these Prelim OB spots are going to go quickly. Or do most people decide to do another specialty, Prelim Sur, Trans year?

The only personal statement I have on ERAS is an OB one....so can you use that for a Prelim Sur year? It might be a stupid question. But I really don't know what to do about that. Just don't send one? The Trans years don't really care if your PS is for another specialty of course...I just didn't know how the Prelim Sur years felt about it.

And yes I agree. I've been trying to talk myself into a few other specialties...FM and Peds were at the top but after 5 minutes I get super sad about it. I want what I want. Prayed about it and I'm hoping for the best tomorrow. Don't worry...we'll be find and this time next year we'll appreciate the path...no matter what it is. It's 5 spot out there to get and someone has to get them. Who's to say it's not us. Gotta think positive to keep from going crazy tomorrow. If it's OB we want (which it's what i want more than anything) then somehow we'll get it 🙂. Don't settle.

Sorry to hear that you experienced this disappointment. When i scrambled, I found that most programs didn't seem to care that much that I had a personal statement obviously geared towards a different specialty. Everyone understands that you're scrambling because you didn't get your first choice. However, if you want to be on the safe side, you might want to do some basic edits to try to explain your interest in other programs/specialties. Best of luck!!!

Ok. By the grace of God I was able to secure a trans year. 5 minutes after I got that wonderful call I received a call from an Prelim OB program that wants me to come and interview with them. The thing is it will cost me $300+ to get to this interview and they aren't promising anything but an interview. When I asked how long will it take for a decision they said that they could offer me the spot on the spot or I would have to wait a few days.

The Trans year gave me 24 hours to respond and I really love the program. It seems to be GREAT. So what do you guys suggest? My mom said take wants in your hand and keeps it moving. i was going to ask for a phone interview from the Prelim OB program because that's really what i was prepared for with this whole scramble thing.

Tough decision.

I agree with you mom BUT.............. how many other transitional spots are there to scramble to?

If you want OB go to that interview whats 300 dollars in the long run?

If you take the transitional spot and then transfer you'll lose 6 months (OB programs will only give you credit for 6 months because they also need to do 6 months of primary medicine peds etc rotations in intern year).

SO looking at it... 6 mo of OB salary can be $100K-$150K......

What if you don't get the OB transition spot. You're out $300

Right. and I don't want to tell the program I have already to wait...what if they say no and take the spot back. And the program I'm going into is saying they would let me into their OB program that's starting next year. And i'm ok with that. I guess it would kinda be the same with the OB Prelim year...I could go into a position there next year or go into a PGY2 spot if all the credits/rotations can be counted. Because I've heard that some programs can't get all their rotations counted...so I may end up doing a 1st year over...if I get a spot.

I'm going to pray about it and wake up with a clear decision prayfully. And the $300 is alot. We've been living on ONE income and have paid for an interview already that we didn't expect...and just paid for a trip. So money is there...but what if the roof falls in LOL. I just assumed all interviews were through the phone so i was shocked when they asked me to make my way up to NY.

Does anyone know about the Nassau Program in NY?
