I'm a US citizen, I finished my med degree in Australia last year and am doing an internal med internship now, but want to go to the US (west coast) for neurology residency. I was thinking it would be a good idea to do a rotation in the US to get a letter of rec. Unfortunately, I'm not a student anymore and indemnity insurance will be an issue.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do? Observerships? What other options are there? Any places more receptive than others? Is it even worth it, as I may not be able to interact with patients as an observer? Should I just rely on letters of rec from Australian docs?

Cheers

So, I've been perusing this sight and it seems that there are a few people who are very against observerships of any kind.

However, I'd like a neurology perspective. I feel like neurology is much less hands on than other specialties, such as surg, so that in an observership one would be able display their amazingness better.

Does anyone hav any person experience or ideas?

Cheers,

Cheers,

I know of one FMG who did research at my medical school in the neurology department and would occasionally round with the neurology team for several years. She then applied for residency and was accepted. This is not quite the situation you are asking about, but as close to it as I am aware.
