Western requires 2 semester of BioChem, which according to them is the equivalent of 4 quarters (one year) of biochem at my school.

I'm taking OChem this fall, however my school doesn't permit students to take Ochem with BioChem simultaneously (don't know why). But other University that I have checked (i.e. UCI) allows you to take the couse together.

I have a choice, I can go to the other university and take them simultaneously or I can wait (another year). -- I have to also take microbio (only offered in the fall).

What would you do? Is it easier to understand biochem if you have taken ochem? Are you able to get an "A" in biochem if you take it simultaneously with Ochem?

Biochem and Ochem don't overlap all that much, it certainly helps a little to take organic first but you can still get an A in both easily, if you work hard.

You should take it at UCI. The class is very fun with Dr. Tsai teaching. 🙂 She raps the metabolic pathways...hehe. So awesome!

They don't overlap THAT much but taking ochem before biochem will definitely save you from a headache or two. Taking it in reverse (biochem before ochem) will, anecdotally speaking, be a disadvantage. It's kind of like taking algebra w/o knowing how to do fractions--it doesn't come up too often but when it does, it's a pain in the arse.

I'm in a similar situation... sorta...I need the 3rd quarter of o-chem for professional schools (30C if you're familiar with UCLA) but not for my major. I need biochem (and the biochem lab course) for my major. So my dilemma is to choose between the two but the scheduling is awful since some classes are not offered every quarter and I need to graduate on time.
If it's your first quarter/semester ochem class, don't do it. Trust me, you'll need to put ALOT of work into understanding the material. There's just too many info. to digest all at once.

I do recommend taking ochem before biochem, because in many of the metabolic pathways and signal transduction pathways that you will be studying; you need to know what chemicals/enzymes/intermediates/ions do what and how they do it and they all follow general mechanisms you learned in ochem. However, you can get away with just memorizing what does what without "really understanding" it (many people do it this way).

Sorry to hijack this thread but out of curiosity, is an A in Biochem more impressive than an A (or A's) in Ochem or is it the other way around? Likewise, is it worse to have a C in Biochem than a C in ochem? Or is it the other way around.

I always wondered what is given more weight with schools that require biochem....

Thanks!

biochem, imo, trumps ochem, but bother are equally important, biochem has some ochem in it.

I didnt have to take biochem, but am taking it in pharm school. If you were really motivated, like i was, I actually went to 2 diff schools to get 2 classes that conflicted done.

I honestly don't know what you are weirded out about - in my school they don't let you take biochem and ochem simultaneously either , in fact they drop everyone who hasn't completed a year of ochem. You can take both simultaneously but you'll most likely struggle. It's not that the classes overlap very much, although they do somewhat, it's that in ochem most people develop the study skills and mindset they need for the difficulties of biochem. I'd wait a year if I was you, but it's up to you. Good luck !
