hey guys,

I'll be applying this coming summer and my friend brought up something about my course work. During college, my school offered Ochem lecture I (3 credits), Ochem lecture 2 (3 credits) and ochem lab (2 credits). This ochem lab is suppose to complement the two ochem lecture courses. However, my friend told me that I still need to take a second lab class (either an advanced ochem lab course or at some other college). Is this true?

Most schools just say 1 year of lecture and lab so I'm not sure how this will work. I may be just paranoid after my friend told me this. But if anyone who knows some specific details regarding this issue, it would mean a lot to me as I can actually have a peaceful weekend instead of digging through the interest for some info.

One year of lecture and lab means you you take one semester of Ochem1 Lecture + Ochem 1 Lab. The next semester you take Ochem 2 lecture + Ochem 2 lab. At my university, each ochem lab was worth 2 units. Each Lecture was worth 3.

Unfortunately, my school's ochem series is Ochem1 lecture (fall), Ochem 2 (spring), Ochem lab (spring). I heard they are splitting the lab into two semesters next year or the following year. I guess it was confusing some schools as well.

I'm told this lab is sufficient to apply for med school. But, my friend (who went to a different college and currently is in med school) told me it doesn't as he heard some people had to take an ochem lab somewhere else. And I didn't know if this applied to dental schools as well.

You have nothing to worry about. My school's orgo works the same exact way, and plenty of students have been accepted to several dental schools.

That's what I thought. From what I heard, the general rule for most schools is 8 credits of organic chemistry (6 from lecture and 2 from labs). My ochem lab just say Organic Chemistry Lab and it's in the 3,3,2 credit format so hopefully it doesn't cause any problems or confusion.

My school doesn't offer two organic chem labs. Just one semester with experiments that complement both ochem 1 and ochem 2. There is one advanced organic chemistry lab, but that's for chem majors.

By the way, which school are you referring to if you don't mind me asking?

UMDNJ and asked the assistant dean of admissions directly because there was confusion amongst predents at my school.
