On the exam do you guys have to write these out or are you able to do them in your head?

I havent taken the exam yet, but if it a easy 2-3 step I can do it in my head. It would be better to write them out, Dr. Romano once said it is better to draw the molecule when naming it. I would listen to him he knows what he talking about, so in that sense write it out.Writing out in Ochem is always gonna help, your just gonna get confused with doing them in your head especially if your reacting with alkynes then to an alkene to an epoxide and so on and son and blah blah, see it gets confusing.
You obviously have to think about it but if you have a good idea write it down, so you dont forget it

I assume they are easy problems then since you can do most in your head.

I just think that if you studied enough you'll be able to know what happens without writing it down, but I think that's how it is when you're doing practice problems too.

I would assume that the reactions given on the DAT are simple unlike some of the ones that appear on DAT Destroyer. You should be able to do them in your head. Just memorize all the reactions or get a sense/feel of what each does then you should be fine

Most of them are very simple and I was able to do them in my head because i had all of the reactions i saw memorized. Had i forgotten one of them(which happened several times on practice tests), i would have written them down and drawn the mechanism out forsure

I recently just took orgo, is there a lot of orgo 2 on the exam. I know all of the conceptual stuff like acid base, resonance, nomenclature, stability.... and know all the simple reactions. If what you guys say is true, the orgo sections is not that difficult huh? compared to orgo exams lol

Also do we need to certain mechanisms for how reactions happen, or just predict the product?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY more simple than orgo exams haha, just more broad. Orgo is probably enough, just memorize the common reactions on flashcards. The Destroyer road map or chad video's reaction list will cover all of the ones you haven't seen from Orgo2. Very few mechanisms, but when there are its usually something like "Where does the carbocation form?" or "which is the Markovnikov product?"
