Hello,

I am a student at a university that is considered a 3rd tier or 4th tier school by the US News rankings. I don't know if I completely trust the US News report, but... Do you think coming from ODU will negatively affect my application? It's not UVA, but it does have some really good programs/departments here and there as do most schools. I might be paranoid for no reason. Thank you for your input.

As long as you take the required classes, do well in them, and rock your MCAT it doesn't really matter where you went to undergrad. Good luck to you!

bump for more responses 🙂

Agreed. If you have the credentials and experiences, med schools really don't care which undergrad you attended.

Don't worry about it, if you have the MCAT to go along with your GPA, it'll all even out in the end.

As long as you take the right courses, you should be fine. (I graduated from a low-tier school).

However, two things (1) make sure you have the right guidance througout the school year (meaning, do your volunteer work, research etc...) (2) and make sure you get the recommendations in (i had real trouble with this..my advisor sucked and I had to kiss some serious a** to get things in on time.

I like to think that these two things are handled better at bigger schools (but I could be wrong).

In theory it shouldn't matter where you went to school, but I think it does a little. I also went to an undergrad that most people haven't heard of, and although I am happy where I am accepted, I wonder if I would have been more successful if I came from a school with more name recognition. If you are shooting for the top tier of med schools, I think it will be much tougher from a no name school (I know nothing about ODU, maybe it is well known??), but if you are shooting for your state school, like I was, then it won't be a big deal.

:luck:
