Guys, I am starting this thread, especially for IMGs. Let's discuss how many IVs we had this season and if it is good enough to match (considering our interview skills are average).

I interviewed at 17 places, I hope I should be fine.

I haven't placed an IV in a few months, actually. Good thing I'm going into psychiatry.

You can find the info you're looking for here: http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2011.pdf

Shows overall and by specialty, US vs independent. As to your situation, it depends in your specialty but you should be fine.

If you look at the charts for IM, 2/3rds or something like that of independent applicants who dont match end up ranking only 1 or 2 places. For something like 2300/3200 unmatched independent applicants in IM thats the case.

anyone can give an input if i have any hope....let's say i am 32/62 on a program's ROL for 5 slots...do i have any shot in that program? all i can say is it's a very average program.

Yes, you have hope. If you're at the 50th percentile for most programs, your chances are good, since the overall match rate is well over 50%. Considering that you had 17 interviews, you're probably a better candidate than the majority of IMGs. And, as somebody already mentioned, IMGs with 13-15 ranks had a ~90% chance of matching somewhere.

@SHAN: Do i have any chance in this particular program? as i said if am 32/62 on program ROL for 5 slots? i know for sure that 1st 10 are AMGs, that rarely come to this university program.

Well, that's impossible for us to say without more details. Some mid-range university programs will fill early in their list due to a great location or other perks (for instance, U.Hawaii). Others might not be able to fill at all due to an "undesirable" location or other drawbacks (for instance, Creighton).

yes it is very unpredictable...i am talking abt a program where 1st 10 ranked applicants were AMGs for sure (and rarely any AMG comes here) and quite a few of US IMG friends of mine ranked it low...i am in middle of the list...only concern is people with 1-2 IVs, who might be ranked above me. just comforting atleast am ranked right in middle of the list.

I suspect a lot if those just signed up in order to participate in the scramble/soap. So they never expected to match. Not helpful to your statistical analysis.

Truth of the matter is that while you can find an average, and create standard deviations, we aren't really talking about normal distributions here, so single variable statistics will fail you here. So much depends on you, your stats, your interview skills, your networking, where you choose to apply, the specialty you choose. Every data point in your analysis is really quite different -- you can't just plot them on the same graph and look at the distribution. So basically there's no useful magic number you can come up with. Some people are never going to match, no matter how many places, some will match easily. But unless you narrow it down to the odds of someone with a similar CV to you applying in the same specialty, you can't possibly even come up with a guess at a safe magic number.

I thought you only had to apply to one program through ERAS to be eligible for SOAP/Scamble, and register with the NRMP, not rank anything.

Since this data is from the NRMP, I think this part may be false. The rest is a very good point!

How did you find out your ranked 32/ 62?

Mellitus2: inside source! Concern is I am pk w 15+ IVs in general, n if I get in here.

You don't have to have applied anywhere via ERAS to be eligible for the SOAP. Just registered for the NRMP.

From the email ERAS sent everyone last week:

During this period, residency applicants who did not match to a position in the NRMP Main Match may use ERAS to send applications, free of charge, to a maximum of forty five (45) ACGME-accredited programs including both new programs, as well as programs where they applied previously during the ERAS application season. This is the absolute maximum number of applications that applicants can apply to during SOAP week, even if you are willing to pay a fee. Additionally, unused applications from one cycle may not be carried over to the next cycle. You are eligible for the free applications if your account is paid in full and you have applied to, and paid for at least one ACGME-accredited program. Applicants who have applied to at least one ACGME-accredited residency program during the ERAS 2013 season can participate in SOAP for free. Applicants who have not applied to at least one ACGME- accredited residency program through ERAS by 12 p.m. ET, Monday, March 11, 2013 must pay an ERAS registration fee of $92.

mellitus 2: thanks..not sure how much hope i have by being right in middle on 60 ranked, and flighting for 5 positions! am very very stressed....

You said that you went on 17 interviews. Even if you werent to match at your inside source program, you have a very good chance at matching elsewhere.

Like mentioned earlier, theres nothing you can do to change it now and theres no way of knowing until Match day (unless you've got another inside source). Just take it easy for the next 2 weeks and see what happens.

Ronin786: thanks..yes w/ 17 other interviews it's highly likely i will get matched, assuming i have average interview skills. i did received email from one program multiple times that they hope to see me soon, etc...but yes, my concern is #1 place on my list...am praying very hard...that people above me get somewhere else, as this location is not ideal and not too many people like to be here.

Sure, but do you really think the average paranoid IMG wouldn't rank something just in case? Or maybe just ranked MGH or Hopkins just to say they did?

input:

try to relax... you will find out in a matter of days whether you matched, and after that it's only a few more days until you find out where.

until then... get a hobby.

nothing that anybody on this board will tell you could possibly allay your fears. so just let it be.

@ 12six: lol, yes right...was just being paranoid and overly concerned...i knw people laugh w/ these many interviews as most did less than 10 and are still happy

it's good that you are self-aware that it is paranoia.

now all you need to do is just accept that it is a feeling you will have - no matter what - until you find out what the results are.

so until then, i'd advise that you just try to ignore that desire to ask others for their opinions on your chances because it will just keep you thinking about it even more.

avoid talking or thinking or typing about it, and you will be amazed how quickly your anxiety dissipates.
