I'm excited that my first month as an EM intern will be on the ortho service! FYI, I wasn't able to do an ortho rotation as a D.O. medical student (I did sports medicine instead since I didn't want to travel far).

Anyway, my question is- what is expected of an off-service resident? I despise residents who have the poor "I'm not going into this field so I could not care less" attitude, and do not wish to follow suit. While I am not going into ortho, there are plenty of things to learn that will be useful for me in the ED.

Thanks for the advice in advance. 🙂

I am a soon to be ortho intern, but I've worked with EM residents during my med school sub-Is. There are many orthopaedic emergencies that are relevant to EM practice. Try to be as hands-on as possible, learn how to do reductions, work on your casting, diagnostic testing/procedures for common orthopaedic injuries, etc
