hi guys..

I love the helping mentality of our SDN family..which is precisely why i thought i will ask for help right here....im so confident i will get answers!!!

1) i am preparing for Part 1 for the first time...and I have dental decks(2001), Kaplan notes and question papers till '98. The books I have with me are Chaurasia's Head and Neck, Gyton's Physiology and Wheeler's Dental Anatomy. I want to get some books like Netter's Anatomy Atlas from India. Cd u give me suggestions as to what books or any other material to buy which wd be helpful for Part 1?

2) When called for interviews, i have heard they ask for recommendation letters and stuff. Do we have to get that from our college professors? Can anyone clarify this? Is there anything else i shd remember to bring back from India?? I dread coming back and thinking, ' Sheesh, I forgot this!!"

Thanks in advance for all ur help....

hi,
try to get books on biochem if u dont have one......thats one subject that u have to prepare the most for.....
yes, most colleges ask for 3 reco letters ....one of them has to be from the dean of the college and other 2 can be from the faculty or even from any dentist that u may had been working with.....
also u need to get ur transcripts and degree certificates....
some schools here ask for sealed transcripts and reco letters so dont forget to get a few of them sealed.
hope that helps.

i will advise you to get recommendation letters atleast from 2 staff members and your college dean. and if you are planning to read i hope you have all books if not get that from india such as chaurasia for anatomy and siddiqui for biochem.it helps a lot. get certified copies of degree and individual marksheets of each year from your school and a consolidated transcript for all years. pooja

u have to absolutely have recos frm the dean. thn frm atleast 2-3 staff. get a lot of recos. some of thm sealed and stamped and signed by the prof.
keep atleast 1 copy of each prof and ur deans non sealed so tht u can take photocopies of the recos. some schools dont need the original reco , a notorised photocopy would do.

thanks a bunch, Ann...

just to be sure...when u say, 'sealed'... do u mean sealed in an envelope or the sealed school stamp? i am a little confused..

thanks again for ur help..

ms_toothmaniac

hey it should be sealed with school stamp on the leaflet.do it for all the recommandation letter.see that u get the seal of respective professors on the letters and envelop too.try to get as many as possible.if possible tell them not to put the date on the letters.bcos they accept those letters which were written within 1 yr.hope for the best for ur addmission but by chance if u dont get anyewhere in 1 yr and they have already put the date on the letter then u have to get new letters again from ur school.and it will be pain in a## to get from here.
but regarding the transcript ,i have some of my own doubts.i had applied to around 13 schools here and i think that include all the schools in states who except interna. student .but nobody asked for any sealed [in envelop] transcript.they asked for our marks card with sign and seal of principal.and some schools ask for notarised copy which u can get it done from any bank here where u have ur account.
i spent 3000 bucks for getting transcript fom my uni. and it is still with me.nobody asked for it.

hi toothmaniac
good luck to your trip to our homeland
as others have said correctly , get dean's certificate from your college and get reccomendation letters from at least three proffessors
take like five copies from them and if they can put it in their own envelopes , it would be great
also you can find some good deals on kaplan and part 1 and part 2 papers in india
so shop around for it
Also can you bring some warm weather here to canada, oh boy it is freezing here 😛

have a great time and also eat lots of bhel puri and pani puri , masala dosa

hi pinkindia..thanks for that info...so i shd get one recommendation letter each, from my dean and 3 professors..i shd get a 5-6 copies of each letter and get ALL of them sealed with the respective stamps. Also put all of them in envelopes and get the envelopes sealed too!!! Hope i got that right..

..SHEESH! thats a lot of work and like u said ....a pain in the neck to ask for all that from my college.
abt the transcript...dont worry its not a waste of money...when u apply for jobs u will need that..they will not want to go thru all ur marksheets..they wd be pleased with the consolidated transcript!

well yes ,i mean closed sealed envelopes with a stamp on thm. upitts definitely asks for it. and tht is how recos r supposed to be. though not many schools insist on having it tht way but u never know whn the requirements change.
so to be on the safer side get everything possible including transcripts.

and a free pani puri .......... wow.. not a bad deal , my mouth is watering already

anyways enough of jokes
i don't know much about bangalore as I use to live in bombay
i know they sell kaplan and part 1 and 2 material in a bookstore somewhere near V.T station
i don't remember the name of the store but if you move around V.T station towards GPO (general post office) there are lots of book store over there and they give you a good deal
so if you happen to go to bombay than go over there
also give my regards to Amitabh Bachan --

hey,
i think it is called 'cheapest xerox ' or something like that .it is near VT station and u get released papers and decks there.part 2 also i think the latest editions he doesnt have all the time....but u may ask
but i dont think u get kaplan there......i think u will find kaplan notes somewhere in bandra.......but they r very expensive as they r available only in original there.
if u really want to buy kaplan (if u feel they will be of real good help)u shud try to go for used kaplan notes which u might get here itself instead of buying originals from india.that way it will be cheaper for u....
all the best..... 👍

ure right it is cheapest xerox and its a small xerox shop opp GPO.. more towards the side away from VT ..
he doesnt have the latest stuff.. dental decks are 1990... i think.. anyway i have them.. and they are a waste.. better to get latest ed from here....
q papers are available but he doesnt have part j or k...he only has stuff till 1990. plus part a of part 1 has half the sections missing... and a few other copies also have afew missing pages....
part 2 the xerox is very bad.. esp the pics.. cant make out a thing...
my suggestion is dont waste ure money from cheapest xerox.. but it here...
i have the xerox copies and old edof dental decks (from cheapest xerox)here ... if u want i can send it to you...

but he does have text books xeroxed.... but im sure they are old too.. check the ed available here.. before u buy any book.. cause a lot of changes keep occuring in these ed..
and in the exams.. they will ask u latest stuff.. like eg.. the whellers that i used in college and that avilable now is different.. changes like eruption time table for decideous teeth has been made....

kaplan classes have started in india .. and they have notes too.. thats what is available in bandra , mumbai...the course was for about Rs. 10,000 when i inquired last yr... maybe its still better than what u will pay here... but u can check itn out...
if u want the tel no,.. can send it to u...

just to add about kaplan
I think if you get enrolled in kaplan , you can access kaplan anywhere in the world
that means if you pay Rs 10,000 for a kaplan course in india
you can come with your kaplan identification card and access the kaplan centers in USA,
if you enroll for kaplan in USA, it costs i think around 1000 dollars just for part 1
so do think about this and also make sure you ask kaplan
wheather you can get access to kaplan centers all over the world including USA

Hi there
don,t worry about the transcripts.marksheets here r referred to as transcripts.i too was told about some other version of some special concise transcripts with no. of hours put and stuff but really that is not needed.i,ve applied to a couple of schools and have just sent notarised copies of my four year marksheets and degree.and there has been no problem.
but regarding recom. letters i too would advise you to get individual sealed envelopes.from the dean and 2 faculty members.
best of luck
and as far as subjects go i would say physiology and biochem is the toughest.
try to get a good grasp of physio basics.this is where they try to get u.(at least i feel that )
GOOD LUCK

hi there
yups.I,ve taken my part1 in aug94.
as far as dental anatomy is concerned, the dental decks are the best.wheelers is too elaborous and you end up getting lost.dental decks(try to get the latest)gives u the exact points.tho, for occlusion okeson has few good chapters.
i attended kaplan purely for the reason that i had no idea where to start as i graduated in 95.it gave me the perspective how to go ahead with all subjects.moreover i could not study at home.but if you have the kaplan book and decks ,q.papers then u could skip kaplan.dental videos are waste.
