Hey guys - this is off topic but thought I could get your opinions. I just got back from picking my dog up from my vets office where he stayed the past 2 nights. I didn't realize it until I came home but he smells like pee and definately needs a bath because of it. Now, I'm not sure if I'm being completely unreasonable or not (please tell me if I am) but I sort of have higher standards then that. I've borded him there a zillion times and never had a problem. I picked him up half an hour before they closed for the day so it's not like I picked him as soon as their doors opened this morning.

I have to see my vet next week for a re-check and was thinking of mentioning it to her. Having not had the chance to do behind the scenes stuff at a clinic yet I didn't know if it would be unreasonable for me to say something or not. The thing is little stinker is a miniature dachshund - he's not some big furry dog who is hard to clean.

So just curious what your honest thoughts are - if I'm being high maintenece, please tell me so!

No idea, depends on a lot of factors. At the boarding kennels associated with our clinic (not the same location) we have playcare, and they tell owners that if they want thier dogs clean and pleasant after a week's worth of board and play, they need to drop the extra cash for a bath/grooming. At the vet clinic, we don't board animals, but if we have an animal create a mess in its kennel, we will generally give it a 'quick' bath to clean the dirty spots, but it probably won't be completly dry when the owner picks it up.

At the clinic I worked at during undergrad if an animal soiled its cage or on itself we would kind of spot clean it before the owners came to get it. We usually did this with sprays depending on how much time we had and how dirty the dog was or what was wrong with it. I don't think they we sent anyone home that was reeked but if it wasn't that strong (I'm assuming it wasn't since you didn't notice til you got home) they also may not have noticed at the vet.

Yeah, he was on his leash when I picked him up from the vets and then walked him home so I didn't get close to him to notice 'til I lied down when we got home and he snuggled next to me and then I realized he smelled.

I'm probably just being hard on them, when I shouldn't be. They're really fantastic overall - they just charge more than usual & pride themselves on customer service.

You can mention it, but if he had peed on his bedding or right before you came to pick him up, the staff may not have had time to notice, and they wouldn't have been up close to smell him, either. I know that after a 12 hour shift of pee/poop/vomit/ear infections, my sense of smell for any bodily fluid is pretty much shot. Unless it's an ongoing problem I wouldn't worry about.

This sounds way more harsh that I would like it to, but... unless you pay for a bath on the day they're going home, it's not really our fault if your dog isn't potty-trained enough to not wee in his cage.

That said, I would hope that they walked him enough, and I can certainly think of a few cases where I would give the dog a real quick bath just out of courtesy. I work in a small clinic, though, and larger ones might not even have the time.

Just an opinion, here. You could bring it up if you like, but make sure you're nice about it - boarding is kind of a pain in the butt in general.

I'm een zee deesguise. No vun recognize me. 😏

You are a nut! That is my def my favorite smiley. That one and :ninja:

On topic...if it doesn't feel awkward, I would possibly mention it to the doc. Boarding may be a pain, but it is a pretty big money-maker. Getting your dog back smelling like urine is a pretty big deterrent! If the vet does a lot of boarding business, he may be glad for the feedback.

I probably won't say anything. I was tired when I picked him up yesterday & got him home. My vet is really, really great.

And whoever said the comment about him knowing when he should & shouldn't pee in his crate was absolutely right!

He's one dog @ home and an entirely different one at the vets 🙂

Twelvetiger - off topic but I LOVE your avatar - I love Calvin & Hobbes!

I kind of agree withe veryone here. If you got him and he was covered in feces or you could smell uring on him a leash lengths away, then i would mention it, but otherwise, it's not that big of a deal if you ahd to bath him when he got home.

With my dogs, if i don't pay for a bath on their last day of board, I'll bath them right when they get home. This is just me being OCD and just a habit i picked up a couple years back. Plus my dogs love baths, so it helps them forgive me for leaving them in a strange place for so long.

Calvin and Hobbes was a pillar of my childhood, even though I read them before I really understood a lot of it... but I grew into it. Hobbes is probably my favorite tiger ever... 🙂
