I have an interview for surgery in a couple hours and I just thought of asking this when they ask me if I have any questions. I'm an IMG a couple years out of medical school and have been doing unpaid research and working another job to pay the bills. I was thinking of asking if there would be an opportunity to come start research with the program after the match but before the start of residency. Would a PD see this question as a sign of an enthusiastic candidate or a desperate one? (Yes I am in fact both lol)

Try not to come off as desperate. I would be wondering what you'd be doing in the mean time - ie, usually people are finishing med school, or finishing up their jobs, etc, prior to coming. I doubt it will make a difference either way but it would seem strange to me to offer to come after you match and before residency starts. It would make me think you have nothing else going on, which is not attractive in candidates.
