Hi,

I was under the impression that it was no longer legal for residency programs to offer spots outside the match.

Recently, I heard that programs in less competitive specialties, such as Path, were complaining that they would be at a disadvantage, so this policy was recinded.

Does anyone know definitley whether or not certain specialties, in particular Path, are allowed to offer spots outside the match??

If so, are only IMGs and USDOs allowed to accept these offers?

Thanks.

My understanding is, after just getting clarification from the NRMP, that programs can offer contracts to Independent (non U.S. allopathic seniors) Applicants outside the match, provided the Applicant withdraws from the Match prior to a deadline (forget the exact date) and the Program reduces it's quota by that amount before a certain date. Next year, I believe, NO contract offers outside the Match will be permissible.

I got a pre-match this year in an ACGME program. I have not heard anything about a change in policy for next year so I have no idea if it is true or not.

However, I can verify that everyone but US senior allopathic candidates are currently allowed to be accepted before the match. That means US MDs who are a year or more out of medical school, IMGs, FMGs, and US DOs.

Good luck!

I do seem to remember a few years ago that the NRMP tried to change the rules so that if a program used the match, then they were not allowed to offer pre-match contracts, and therefore everyone had to go through the match (including FMGs etc.). That policy was quickly rescinded after numerous programs complained.

I found an article discussing this when it was proposed.
