This thread is for owners of the Dell Axim X50v. Tell other Dell Axim X50v users what you've done to your PDA to make it even more useful to you in the clinics, in lectures, and on-the-go. List your favorite downloads, software, modifications, accessories, cases, and upgrades.

Case- Dell leather flip case
Memory -256CF 64SD (waiting on a 1g SD which should get here today)

Software - spb pocket plus, great for accessing all relevent programs from the today screen, plus the close screen actually closes programs.

Ballinger - Pocket essentials of clinical medicine, good basic program (mobipocket) however comes up a little blurry on the vga screen

Handheldmed- Intern pocket survival guide, resident pocket survival guide, CCU intern pocket survival, EKG pocket survival, Surgical intern pocket survival. Sheap bundle with some useful tidbits there.

Lexicomplete- Indespensible but expensive and lacking in areas (subspecialities), only a little blurry on vga, still perfectly usable.

Used epocrates in the past on my X3, good free program with an interface thats alot easier than lexi drugs. Never installed on my X50v

Pocketword- for typing up lists of pimp questions which i seem to forget (causes of clubbing etc)

Stethographics pocket guide to lung sounds/heart sounds. Another cheap program, not all that great though. Make sure you have headphones (which I do because 90% of the time, my pda is a mp3 player 🙂)

Can you provide a link for SPB PocketPlus? Never heard of it. Is it free?

Not a chance. However it is an excellent program, totally opens up your pocket pc making it much easier to switch between programs etc. Here is the link anyway, give it a try.

Does the Axiom have landscape viewing? I can't seem to find it on the Dell website.

Thanks

Yes. It does. Looks good too.

Pox in Box,

In your posts, you state the VGA screen is blurry with many programs. Would you reccommend purchasing a PDA with this feature?

Thanks for your input.

I have never said that statement. You must be referring to another viral mnemonic...

You are right. Someone else posted that comment. I am contemplating getting the Axim x50 or Tungsten 5. The choices...the choices... the choices..

Pox, do you reccommend the VGA model?

I like the Dell because of the variety of things you can do...i.e. jump online and check your e-mail at the local Starbucks, buy plane tickets in the library, connect to Bluetooth, plus Pocket PC is skyrocketing in sales and thus support and programming will be leaning toward it more in the future. I consider Palm to be the Apple of the 1980s. Apple was the only one on the market. The Apple IIGS, my first computer...they were the only ones out there until Mr. Bill Gates unleashed Windows and Apple basically rolled over and died (except they came back on fire with the iPod). I honestly don't think Palm will die but I do think that Pocket PC will end up head and shoulders above the competition in the near future.

You do realize that "Switcher Bar" is a program that is part of WM2003, and performs the stated functions? I know PocketPlus has other features...but you shouldn't go spending money on it if all you want to do is shut down programs and switch between those that are running.

But, I got myself the Axim x50, and now I need to stock it with software, and everyone mentioned epocrates is free, yet their website only gives the Rx, and a few med tools away free, and then after installation, it doesn't seem to work, it wants the whole epocrates to operate from. Where is it free?

I use SwitcherBar too. I honestly don't like it and would rather have minimization of "windows" but it's fine.

Do you guys find that the battery is able to go through a day? Just wondering if you're using an extra standard or extended battery? Also, do you find having the extended battery w/ case to be too hefty to carry around?

Does anyone have a comment re the battery issue?

I have the 520MHz model, so I think my battery life is probably better than the 624MHz, VGA folks. But I still check my e-mail several times a day and listen to some music now and then. Just turn off the wireless when you aren't using it (including bluetooth) and keep the screen on the dimmest setting.

I haven't had battery issues. I do what heldicus suggested and it's not a problem. Recharge every day or whenever at home. PDAs are not made for watching movies on the go. If you want to watch a movie, plug it in to an outlet. That's why there are portable DVD players.

I just got my axim and while exploring the bluetooth menu, I saw that I had an option to go online using a bluetooth cell phone. I was wondering if anyone out there knows if/how I can go online using a bluetooth enabled cell phone ? Do I need to contact T Mobile ? Any other advice/ideas ? Thanks.

Anyone tried installing John Hopkins Antibiotic guide? I can't get it to work on my x50v for some reason...runs into errors during the installation.

how is this program? is it superior to the antibiotic sections in epocrates.

thanks

The JHA guide doesn't work on the axim. For some reason it's not configured, not sure why. Waiting for an update (check their site). For all those of you who like the Spb programs, like weather, time, financial planner, etc, just do searches for the information you need to access the programs, if you get my drift. Download the trials and install them completely once you have what you need (the word rhymes with cereals).

In terms of other stuff, has anyone tried the skyscape programs, trial or purchased? I bought my Axim x50V despite the fact that my school requires a palm based PDA for the price, amazing screen, and fact that PPC is coming close to inching out palm. I'm finding a short list of financially-friendly med programs though? Any suggestions, legal or otherwise? hahahahaha!

I've got the Axim x50v and can't seem to get the companion disk to load on my computer. Is there a trick to this or did you just pop the disk into the CD-ROM and it loaded?

whisker,

i recently got the x50v and had the same problem. in my case, the solution was installing macromedia's version flash media player that corrects a registry key line that is installed by popup blockers. if you have a lot of antivirus, firewall, splyblaster, popublocker etc. software installed, your registry may have been edited to disallow a flash media driven installation program like the one that the x50's installation cd uses.

go to the macromedia site and download the flash media version that is available for this kind of problem (there are 2 versions). it worked for me.

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide whether I should buy the Axim x50v or the HP iPAQ 2755 The differences between the two are that the Dell has a better screen, has a landscape mode view, and video graphics memory whereas the HP has more user memory, slightly faster in benchmarks, and a lot of security features.

So basically, I'm trying to decide which to buy and would like your opinions on these. Thanks in advance.

U will never regret getting a VGA device! The screen is gorgeous, and makes long hour of reading more tolerable to our eyes. Battery life is just adequate for a working day use, but u may need to get an extra battery just to standby for days with hectic usage.

With more and more VGA aware softwares emerging in the market, we can see that the trend is moving towards the VGA pocket pc era. Once u have VGA ppc, i am sure u will not look back to the QVGA devices anymore! Although there is some lag/delay everytime u tap on the screen to execute a program, it is tolerable and not of any significance (at least to me...) It will be fine once u get used to it.

Skyscape softwares may not be VGA aware for the moment, but sooner or later, they will be. There is a new beta version for Mobipocket 5.0 which is VGA aware; if u have the current Mobipocket Pro v4.8, u can upgrade by installing over it without having to pay anything. Here is the link:

Enjoy.

You may want to think twice about buying plane tickets at the library. Unless their network is secure, it would be very easy for someone to pull your personal information out of thin air. In general, it's best to make online transactions through hard-wired computers.

It is. I was just referring to the capabilities.

Hey Everyone,
I'm thinking about getting the x50v, but I'm just wondering how much bigger it is than, say the tungsten 5... Size kinda matters to me (no matter what my girlfriend says). Is this an issue at all with any current owners?

From what I do remember it is slightly larger than the others, due to the 3.7" screen vs the more common 3.5" screens. But, the size itself is not too big problem.

No, it has pretty much everything but digital photo capabilities. If you are interested in taking pictures with your pda, check out the HP iPaq line of PPC's. They sell an additional attachment that allows you to take pictures with you PDA.

question: I know with one of the Palms (t5 I think) you could review power points you had created earlier your computer on the palm, is there a program that allows you to do the same on axim x50? ( so I can review presentations while I'm waiting to present..)

Have anybody used theirX50v reading uptodate via the wireless internet? just wondering how practical that is, I don't like the computers in our hospital, I want to buy a Pocket PC with wireless internet access so that I can get online at the hot spots of our hospital, any comment, please?

Okay, so please feel free to speak to me like I am a two year old when you answer this.

I am thinking about a PDA, even though I am not very technologically literate. I think I would like a PPC better than a palm based device, but am worried that there isn't as much medical software available. Realistically, have you all run into this problem?

I'm pretty excited if Windows Mobile 5 means bringing the OpenGL graphics set with hardware acceleration to the PDA realm. 🙂

My question is about how many worthwhile medical applications one can fit on these beasts. My school is ofering a bundle of software, but some of the machines have one 64M. Now in PC terms that is squat, but how much memory should these things have to run at a good speed and hold the major medical software out there plus some others?

Thanks

Anyone know the deal with why the following would happen or how I can fix it...

I loaded in a bunch of dates and whatnot into my calendar and included some "notes" to add addn'l info per event (ie. contact info, location details, etc). Well, after I recently activated the switcher bar to go between active programs, I've 1) lost the "notes" i've already stored and 2) lost the ability to use the "notes" function period (it'll allow me to access the blank notes screen, but doesn't allow me to use the stylus and input any letters or other info).

Please help me out with this if you can.
