Wow, Durfen, you withrdrew from two top MSTPs for an MD-only spot at Stanford? Just curious, did you change your mind about doing the MD-PhD, or was Stanford that amazing, or were there personal things that played into the decision?

Mostly personal. I wanted to stay in Cali. MD/PhD >= MD in my books. Economically, MD/PhD is not a value proposition. Academically, it is. You get theoretical research training, which is extremely valuable. In the end, staying in Cali won out. So no, I did not change my mind about MD/PhD, but I had to make a tough decision between two important factors. I decided to do the MD in Cali, and maybe apply internally, because, in any case, I am more into technology-driven, applied research (i.e translational) rather than hypothesis-driven, theoretical research. Stanford's great for this sort of thing 😀.

My understanding of the way Stanford works is that it's a fairly straight-forward transition into a PhD coming from the medical school class. It seems to me the decision (excluding location) is between paying and getting paid. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the decision I'm trying to make right now.

My advice: Use Excel, use a borrowing interest rate (9%?) for med school loans and a good case mutual fund return rate (11%) for MSTP stipends and opportunity cost of 3-4 yrs lost pay (~$150000-$200000 per year). It's very simplistic, but it'll give you an idea. In my case, MSTP was $-15000 per year. It's not much, but surprising that I didn't come out waaay ahead. As said in other threads, cost should definitely *not* be a deciding factor in going MSTP, simply a mitigating one.

well, I agree you shouldn't do a PhD that you don't want, just so you don't have to pay for med school. However, if you're choosing between paying for an MD/PhD at a school that's a better fit and being paid for an MD/PhD at a school that doesn't fit you quite as well, but where you think you'd still be happy, I think cost is a fairly important consideration. It could easily determine your lifestyle for the next ~20 or more years.

There are actually not that many posts here compared to the acceptance thread. With six days until the May 15th deadline, I'm quite surprised.

i think it goes to show how many people are waitlisted at choices that are higher than their current acceptance

Superslacker- They most likely use it, but don't post. I would estimate ten lurkers for every poster.

10:1? What exacting scientific method did you utilize to arrive at this ratio? Take everything Caristra says with a grain of salt -- she's a little crazy

she said she estimated.

and congrats on yale:clap:

He's just mad because he won't get to be in NY with me now that he's going to yale. You know you're going to miss me hater and Don't make me break out the comments about your home state.

The method was basically scroll down to where it says how many people are viewing this forum now. It's usually like one registered member and 8-12 guests. AT least when I log in.
