Has anyone else got the email from UKent saying they messed up: I'm in shock guys; I ranked them very high..
We are writing to inform you of an error that occurred when the rank lists at the

University of Kentucky were entered into the NRMP. Unfortunately, our categorical (4-

year program, start as PGY1, 9 positions available) list was entered under the program

code for the advanced program (3-year program, start as PGY2, 1 position available) and

vice versa. This error was just discovered yesterday, March 13, 2006.

Because it has been our practice to only put the applicants who specifically expressed

an interest in a 3-year position during the interview process on the 3-year program rank

list, only seven names were on that list which was supposed to be submitted for the one

PGY2 position available. As a result, the vast majority of applicants who interviewed at

the University of Kentucky for a 4-year position were not on the rank list that was

ultimately used by the NRMP for our categorical positions and, therefore, had no chance

of matching with our program.

We sincerely, apologize to all applicants who have been affected by this error. While

we are disappointed that most of our resident positions will be unfilled, we are MOST

upset that this error may have affected the lives of resident applicants who had ranked our

program highly and hoped to have an opportunity to train in our department.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for this mistake. All of the applicants who

interviewed at the University of Kentucky were exceptionally strong candidates and will

become outstanding anesthesiologists who will represent our specialty well. It is with

deep regret that we realize our error will deprive us of the opportunity to work with many

of you. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us

Damn
I wonder if the NRMP would allow you to withdraw your match if you submitted a rank list with kentucky as your #1? Either way, that friggin blows man.
G/L anyways

Yep, got the same e-mail this morning. Unbelievable to say the least. However, I'm banking on my #1, so hopefully it's not going to impact me. Still rediculous how this could possibly happen.....head(s) gotta be rolling there this morning.... 😱

So perhaps without this F....up Anesthesiology would have had that many less unfilled match spots this year.

Wow, I can't believe someone would make such a stupid mistake with so much at stake for these peoples' lives. Piss poor...

in my opinion, i think they should find a way to compensate everyone who took the time and spent the money to travel to Lexington and interview there. just my thought

They were actually the only program that paid for hotel and airfare.

I think this day will mark a major blow to the reputation of UK Anesth program. It's unfortunate that as resident applicants you checked your ROL hundreds of times to make sure you didn't make a mistake; you'd think a program would at least double check and recheck several times to make sure they made no mistakes. 🙁 🙁

Correct. If you disregard this blunder, in reality there were only 15 unfilled spots this year.

I screwed up my interview date with UK and didn't make it. I was hitting myself for the longest time because my best friend liked them so much he ranked them #1. He is really pissed right now. Funny thing, I got the email this morning as well.

wow, didn't know they paid for both. that's still no excuse for this tragic blunder.

I loved UK at my interview; plus they paid for all my travel expenses, meals, and hotel. No other place did that! Plus all the residents seemed really happy, so I'm very disappointed... I guess it just wasn't meant for me to be there! I would really like to know, however, how this could happen....

How bad would this be for a UK med student who really wanted to stay at their program? I would hope some better checks to prevent something like this would be in place.

Wow, really glad I didn't go on that interview!
How painful would it be to get that email if UK was even in your top 5?
"Oh no!" is right.

So I'm really bored on my current rotation and am aimlessly searching the net. I looked at the UofK anesthesiology website, and it said that they received over 500 applications for the empty slots between noon and 4pm of yesterday. Good god.

I'm sure this affected many many more applicants than one might think. It's like friendster, everyone is linked.

Definitely, something like this has a ripple effect across the match. Especially regionally. You would think this would have been something they would have looked at since the match program was run a month ago. I mean what is the month wait for if not to re-check for silly s hit like this.

No joke. Absolutely no excuse for any of this to happen.

maybe they (the NRMP) should question the "no altering your list past 9pm weds night" rule. maybe there should be a 3 day grace or a "1 chance to change" or something like that....just a thought

6 degrees, etc. I guess we'll never really know how it affected us unless we still end up at our number one choice.
Good luck to all. T-minus 15 hours...

well, the reason why it takes so long to get the match results is that the NRMP runs the algorithm and then verifies it - repeatedly. when they have programs in a competitive field that that have such an obvious discrepancy, there should be a mechanism to contact that program and ensure that they entered their match data correctly. the downside, of course, is that this could "clue in" a program that they are not going to make their numbers and more people might be ranked. this may be perceived as an unfair advantage to other programs and could (theoretically) be exploited by programs who wanted to be ultra-select on the first go around. however, such an obviously gross error should stand out - and you're right it does have a ripple effect across other programs.

the match, just like democracy being the worst form of government, is the worst system there is. but, it's also still better than all the rest. i guess too bad for u of k, but i guess that the administrator who entered the match data will not retain that job in the future. says nothing about the program itself, though. just an unfortunate error that probably happened as the result of one (or two) persons' mistake.

A few years back, University of Wisconsin's Ortho program had a similar mistake. The Residency coordinator forgot to enter more than half of the list. She only put in the top 5 ROL for U of W and subsequently, they matched only 2 of the 5 positions. The Chair of the program was pissed, and called the NRMP personally to re run the Ortho match after the match results were already released. However, the NRMP said no, so U of W had to scramble their 3 spots. And there was a open secretarial job after the Match at U of W. 😀
