hey ppl... the waiting should be over today,

I checked the status of my online application few moments ago, I have the following message.

Status: A decision has been made on your application. To ensure privacy, you will receive written notification of that decision by mail.

I don't know what that means (does anyone what it means, if that status changed from DEFERRED to DECISION). I think the admission number has been flooded with calls in the past few days, so maybe the school prefers to notify us through letter, since calls are not being answered.

Again, good luck.

I would say that it is a good sign but I don't know, mine still says deferred so now i gotta sit through class with this hanging over my head :scared: too bad we can't call, i hope the letters come today if thats the case

Mine changed from Deferred to Decision, and I called and found out I was accepted. You have nothing to worry about.

I called, and I didnt get in. I'm on the alternate list but I'm far enough down to know I havent got a prayer. Basically, this means I won't be gettin in anywhere, this was my 2nd time through the cycle and no luck so far, I think I'm going back to grad school but right now I'm really frustrated, I need a break from all this application stuff and I'll be back around soon enough. Good luck everybody, and congrats to those who got in, you're going to be at an awesome school.

I am really sorry to hear that. I called today too, and found out that I got in... I am going to spend the next week or so, to decide between OSU and CASE.

I think you should call the school, and speak to Ms West, ask her what was the rejection they gave you was based on. At least you will know what to improve on if you decide to apply again.

Remember, because of this... it doesn't mean you will never be able to get into OSU or any other dental school. It has been a tough and competitive cycle... take sometime to re-think on what you want to do fromhere, before making a decision.

All the best man.

That sucks HangOnSloopy. Yeah, I would try to find out specifically why you were not accepted, so that you can improve your application next time.

And to you Mo007, Congrats! Now...I just hope you pick the right school.

Ditto, I called and I am too on the bottom of the alternate list......i guess it wasn't meant to be....I'm going to call as well but I may give it a few days cause this is pretty depressing.....good luck to all who made it.....OSU is one hell of a school!!

Congratulations to you, Mo007. I hope you make the right decision (i.e OSU 😀 ).

As for HangOnSloopy and dentalguy, I wish you the best of luck in whatever future endeavors you embark on. Keep your heads up. It is not the end of the world.

Man you were waitlisted at Louisville with those stats, they must be a pretty damn competitive school. I feel very fortunate I got in with less comparable stats, I guess my charm wowed them! (Im kidding, I have none of that)

Charm!! What does that mean 😀 ? I don't think I have any of that. I agree it may have been "charm" factor 😕 . But seriously though, they sent me a letter after the interview stating that I have been placed on a "next to be contacted list" and assured me that this is not a "waiting list" and that they would be glad to admit me to their school, but I have to send them some "pink form" first stating that I am still interested in pursuing my dental education at Louisville. I never sent that in order not to give them the false impression that I have committed to attending. So, I guess that may have contributed to the fact that I never heard from them later.

Louisville, by the way, is a great school and as a result of my interview, it became one of my top choices, if not my 1st top choice. The only downside to it is the cost of the out of state tuition, and the fact that if you are out of state, you are out of state for the whole 4 years.

Good luck to you at Louisville .

Thanks man, I waited so long, I am glad it's over.

I will post my decision here (inshallah 😉 ). Would you go to Louisville over OSU if you got instate tuition at Louisville (~$14,000/yr). Also, Louisville living cost is cheaper than Columbus in general. I am just curious, which school has better facility, we all know OSU's facility 😀.

I am glad it's over, for you, as well.

As for Louisville, in all honesty, yes, I would have gone to Louisville. They have a smaller class size (80 students). And they have a dean that makes sure to invest in the school on a regular basis and to renovate the facilities. They have an awsome sim lab, and an impressive histo lab. OSU's facilities seemed antiquated to me in comparison to Louisville. They're also located in a nice area of downtown, where I am sure students get plenty of clinical experience. Another good thing about louisville is that they offer a well structured Masters in Oral Biology program, free of charge for dental students, and the labs and facilities for that program are inside the building of the dental school. Talk about convenience! Students there score on a consistent basis in the top 10 on their boards, which is some indicator of the quality of didactic education they receive. Need I say more? In all honesty, Louisville impressed me.

I guess you decided to go to the cheaper school for you (but not the better school in your opinion 😛 ). Either way, you will be a dentist in the end... and no one will care where you went to school, as far as patients are concerned.

Good luck

Congrats Mo007! It's exciting knowing that you have choices huh? I know you were really hoping to get into OSU! I bought my first OSU hat 3 days ago and I love it! Postle Hall here I come 🙂 Go BUCKS!

what is the possibility of getting in if you are waistlisted?? I am kind of worried. :scared: Usually how many does the school take off the waiting list? Thx!!!

In an average year, between 10-15, in some cases upto 20.

What's your position on the waitlist?

You will never know, they might get to your lucky number 24 this year.

Which other schools accepted you?

Penn is a top school, it's price-tag is a killer though.

I would go there if you didn't get into OSU.

Good Luck

yeah, I am worried about the cost too. I got so scared when I calculated the amount of money I need to pay back after I graduate 😱 😱
Maybe I should wait for another year...... :scared: 🙁 🙁 🙁
PS: mmmm, if you don't go to OSU, I might have a chance to get in, hehehe....

There is a strong chance that I won't go to OSU... I was little disappointed with the school when I attended their interview last year. Their tuition is very attractive as a resident - which is why most people choose to attend the school over others.

I will let you know when I make my final decision. 😉

Congrats Mo007 on your acceptance. I thought OSU was your first choice, why the change of heart? I am still deciding between Columbia and OSU and would love some input. thanks

OSU was my first choice, when it came to convenience... I live in Columbus. My family and friends are here, and I know the city inside out. Moving away was not a priority for me, until I attended the OSU interview.

If I was in your shoes, and was down to OSU and Columbia... then personally, it would have to be OSU. Living costs at NYC alone is an arm and a leg!, Columbia's tuition for what you get is over priced in my opinion... but hey, it's Nuu-YORK! 😀

According to students I met from both schools, OSU is the better clinical school, while Columbia's curriclum (from what I heard) often pushes many students to do GPR (an additional year after dental school).

Either way, choose the school that fits your preferences the most.

Good Luck 😉

P.S. Go to OSU!

Hi Mo007,

What exactly didn't you like about the OSU? Is it just the facilities? In my view, there is more that makes up a good dental school, than just the facilities. The quality of the didactic education is one. The reputation of the faculty is another that comes to mind. The quality of the clinical training, the opportunities for research, and lastly the atmosphere and the welcoming "vibe" that the school has. In my opinion, OSU scored high in my mind, after the interview, in all those aspects. Last year, I job shadowed in a group practice that had OSU, Louisville, BU, and Harvard graduates. And, to tell you the truth, I was especially impressed with the professional confidence that OSU graduates had in their clinical skills, and they all spoke highly of OSU. And on top of that, you get to pay less for such solid education.

I hope this would help tilt the balance towards OSU. However, the decision is yours to make.

Hi Guys! I'm accepted at OSU for the fall! And I look forward to meeting all of you! I'm not from Ohio, nor am I familiar with Columbus. I was wondering if any of you could help me out. I'm thinking of buying a house or a condo somewhere in Columbus but I'm not sure what areas to look in. If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

adriann,

from what i have seen around the campus and surounding areas, a place that is nice and close to campus is called Chatham. they have condos and apartments for sale or rent. two of my friends live there and one is an endo resident here at OSU. she loves it. there are alot of grad and prof students that live there. it is quite and very nice. there are also many other complexes on Bethel Rd. if i get into OSU this cycle for class of 2010 i would def choose chatham for a condo to buy. hope this helps.

This is my first post, but I just wanted to say that I will be attending OSU as well this fall. Should be a fun four years with you all.

Hi j_rod 2009 and joebucks,

I look forward to meeting all of you!

I wanted to introduce myself. I am a non-trad. student (married with an 18-month son). I finally got the good news of being assigned a 2-bedroom apartment at Buckeye Village. Are any of you familiar with Buckeye Village? How safe is the area? What are the advantages/disadvantages of living on-campus for a guy with a family like me? Just wanted the perspective of those dental students who have families like me, had any experience with Buckeye Village family housing, or those of you who lived in Columbus long enough?

Thanks, in advance, for your input.

Hassan,

Buckeye Village seems to be a safe area. I'm probably going to be living in Chatham Village which is right down the street from Buckeye Village and I haven't heard anything bad about the area. I know there used to be a CABS bus that stopped at Buckeye Village and ran by the Medical Center which would be an advantage if the route is still in operation. That's about all the help I can give you.

Thanks for the info j_rod.

Actually, I signed the lease last Wednesday. The area seems to be decent. But the apartment itself was unbelievably small and antiquated 🙁 .

I am also going to OSU.... I am a non traditional student, married....2 children. We moved to Worthington in May and I love it here aside from all of the traffic. There is only one month left before school begins. I can't wait 🙂
