Hey everyone, I just got accepted to OSU, and I was wondering if anyone else was going there too! Yay!! 🙂 👍

Hey LeeLee,

Yeah, I got accepted to OSU back in October! I'm not 100% sure that's where I will end up, but I'm definately leaning towards OSU. I can actually ask you a question... I don't remember seeing the lab rooms when I went on my tour. Do you remember how they looked? Email me at [email protected] if you want to! Congrats on the acceptance!

Matt

I was accepted at Ohio State last monday. See you next fall!

For those of you that have decided on OSU or are leaning towards OSU, can you share your thoughts on why it is a good choice? I am considering OSU as well and I would like to hear your opinions. I haven't heard much about the school except a student saying that of the public schools, OSU is one of the strongest programs. Thanks for your thoughts...

I completed one year at OSU- it is a very good program. The classrooms and lab rooms were old and archaic and not that great, but they are rennovating Starling-Loving Hall so they should improve soon. The clinic/exam rooms were pretty good, so I had no complaints about them. The best reason to go to OSU is the education that you will receive. You will learn so much your first year- especially in Dr. Earley's classes. The 1st-time passage rate for Part I of the Boards has been 90%+ for each year for the past 15-20 yrs except the class of 2005, which had an 85% passage rate. Some of the more recent classes passed at a 100% rate. It was a good experience there- the profs were very helpful and the students were generally supportive of each other. They are also doing some very positive things in the program by hiring some top-notch opticians in the field to teach in the clinic to help OSU students to become top-notch in the optics realm as well as the clinical realm. The campus itself is not the greatest and neither is Columbus, OH, but it is a very good program worth going to. I hope this helps.

I agree to all your points, pluses and minuses, except for campus and Columbus. Both the campus and the city are one thing that drew me. I'm from Michigan State and the similarities between the campuses were obvious, making what seems will be an easy transition for me. Columbus was clean (from what I saw and compared to Lansing and Detroit) and seemed like a good place to live. It probably all depends on what you're used to. All I can say, kgrabar, is that you should visit and decide for yourself, cause no one else will know if you'll like it.

Oh, OK- you lived in the Detroit area. Well, I guess Columbus probably is better than Detroit. My sister and her husband lived in Columbus for many years (both graduated from OSU) and both hated it here. They just moved to the Harrison Twnshp area a year ago and they hate Detroit and Michigan as a whole even more. Well, I hope you like it at OSU- like I said, it's a great school.

Why do people hate Columbus so much? I think it's a great city. I know it's not the biggest and most exciting but it's not like it's Hicksville, USA and there are plenty of things to do if you look hard enough. You could do worse than Columbus.

I personally don't hate Columbus, but I don't like it here very much either. The downtown area is dingy, full of panhandlers, and alot of areas are just dangerous- but, I guess most big cities are like this. The ghetto areas are spreading out closer and closer to the suberbs. I live on the southeast side and the bad areas are getting to close. The Brice Rd area used to be nice, but now elderly ladies are getting mugged in broad daylight. The whole Eastland Mall area used to be pretty decent, and now its just plain dangerous around there. The traffic is also a pain, but again I'm sure it's a pain in all big cities. We get a couple inches of snow and its just plain dangerous to be out on the highway with the way people drive around here. OSU campus also isnt the greatest. There have been a couple students killed in drive-by shootings a few years ago, various riots in the campus area after football games, there are numerous run-down apartments and homes around the campus area, and the east side of High Street betw 5th and 11th avenues is one of the most dangerous areas of the city, and its not that far from Campus. The campus area in general seemed much less safe when I attended opt school than it was when I started as an undergrad in 1987. That being said, OSU has been doing alot of good things around the campus area lately to help clean it up, so maybe it will improve. I'm not saying that its a horrible campus or anything, but it's definately not safe for students to walk alone at night, especially for women.

I'm not fond of the climate either, but I guess the whole midwest is the same. Long, dreary winters where you seldom see the sun, and then it gets hot and humid quickly- not much transition of beautiful sunny and 75-80 deg days. I guess I'm more suited for the South Florida climate (especially the winters).

But, it's not all bad. Some of the suberbs are very nice and safe, and there are alot of things to do. I guess I just need to live in a small town again like I did growing up.
