I will be starting at Ohio State CVM this fall and have been thinking about getting a new laptop soon. My question for you current students is: are there certain models that are recommended? Or is a laptop included in tuition? I just wanted to figure this out now rather than get a new laptop in a couple weeks and find out its not what I need this fall.😀
Thanks

Oh, good question. And, not to hijack your thread, but to piggyback off of it... I've been wondering recently which schools use the tablet PCs in addtion to having most if not all of their coursework available online? I know KSU and Iowa State do. Any others?

UC-Davis?

At TN, we have 7 tablet PC, which people apply for and who gets them is changed every year, I believe. Maybe Daychei can chime in because she has one.

There is no specific laptop at Ohio State. Most people don't bring their laptops to school, but several do. I am planning on getting a new one this summer and I plan on getting a smaller (and quieter - it seems like my keys are loud when I type) as I would like to start taking a computer in to class. Pretty much you can just get whatever laptop you wish.

Maybe I'm just being dense, but I'm not at all sure what you said here. There are 7 tablet PCs available each year (for purchase? for free?) from the school that you can apply for? And then does that person keep that laptop for all of their four years? Beyond? Is the course material available online and paired with the OneNote system? Or just a tablet PC minus those enhancements?

Thanks. 🙂

And hoodle...was the UC Davis a statement of fact, or you think they might but aren't sure?

Just what I was looking for, Thanks👍

There are 7 per class per year. Every year, new students are chosen to get them. They get cleaned off every year, too. Yes, it is online and with OneNote.

So I take it the chosen student doesn't have to pay extra for it. But then they only get it for that one year, not to keep, right? Why are they doing it for only 7 people? What if people beyond the 7 want this? Can they pay extra to get it? What if they want to keep the computer (since their notes will be one it, though I suppose they could transfer them out later)?

It just seems a bit odd to have a different educational tool for so few of the class. Are they trying to test it out and see if they will incorporate it in for a larger portion of the class/the whole class?

Sorry for so many questions. I just find this approach really puzzling.

It was kind of confusing to us, too. You don't have to pay for it while you have the computer, but if you destroy it, you are responsible for the cost. They only have 28 computers that were donated to the school, so they divided them evenly through the classes. that means that there are only 7 per class. you can choose not to apply for one and open spots up for others. You can also buy your own tablet PC. The theory when they first got it was that it would be a trial run. But I think its been going on for a few years (things can be slow in TN). But we (who have the PCs) have questionnaires to fill out at the end. The group of 7 per class is also supposed to have meetings to discuss them occassionally, but we haven't had one yet.

Starting this year Illinois required all incoming 1st years to have a laptop (about 80-85% chose Tablets). By next year - class of 2012 - they expect to be completely paperless. Every student gets a CD of notes for all classes at the beginning of the semester and any additions/corrections are posted by the e-notes rep on the class website as the semester progresses.

So most people carry a bunch of binders around? Are all of the lectures available in digital format (ie powerpoint)? Thanks!

Yep, generally. Some people only bring the notes they need for that day in folders, but I just keep everything in binders myself...
