I was all set to go to Ohio, and now Tufts called and told me I'm off of the waitlist. I'm torn between the two schools because they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I'd be OOS for both. I was wondering if anyone was ever in a similar dilemma with these two schools, and which they chose (and why)?

I was also accepted to both Ohio and Tufts. I really liked the people at both schools. I am not a big city fan so that made Tufts more appealing. The reasons I ended up picking Tufts are a smaller class size (80 vs 140), much earlier interaction with live animals (first year vs not until third year). I was also interested in behavior and Ohio didn't have any courses on behavior and it didn't seem like you could really work with a behaviorist at the hospital. I don't know what you are interested in but Ohio has a stronger equine program than Tufts. You also have a lot of selective and elective time at tufts so you can poke around and figure out what you want to do after you graduate. There are many opportunities to get involved at the hospital (and get paid) there may be similar options at Ohio I just don't remember. I at in state for Tufts but even out of state at Tufts would be cheaper as tuition alone at Ohio is 50K. I know you may be able to get in-state after the first year but that still seemed like a lot and it was unclear how easy it is to get in-state tuition. I also liked the curriculum at Tufts as it is a mix between lecture based and problem based learning.

I hope that helps--sorry its so long!

Good luck with your decision

I appreciate long answers! The more info, the better. 👍 What does Tufts' equine program lack compared to Ohio's? I was actually an Animal Behavior undergrad major, so I find Tufts' behavioral aspect intriguing. I plan on calling both schools' financial aid offices tomorrow and getting the scoop. Getting in-state residency at Ohio would be huge, but I would hate to go there assuming it's pretty much guaranteed and then not get it. Then it would be a lot more expensive than Tufts. I heard that first years at Ohio get $10,000 off tuition, too? Maybe a current Ohio student can clear all of this up for me. 😉

Thanks!!!

Hey HarryMonster!

I'm not a current student but when they called to tell me I got in they told me that they were working on giving all incoming OOS student's a $10,000 scholarship to help combat the crazy tuition cost. And I think it was ri23 who said that they do this every year for OOS students, but I could be wrong.
I have an email into financial aid asking about residency ease and the scholarship...can you post what you find out if you do decide to call?

i work with a vet that went there (graduated 2006), and she said pretty much everyone gets residency. she said they make it sound hard to scare you, but everyone in her class that wanted it got it.

Thanks winglessflight! That was the impression that I got from my interview..my interviewer said that there are a bunch of hoops to jump through but the school staff helps you with them, and that as long as you began the process early you'd have no problem.

Also, I received an email from Jane in financial aid...she said the OOSers were getting the $10,000 scholarship this year and that our award letters would be sent out the last week of June. She also sent me a sample budget for vet students...pm me if you'd like it and i'll give it to you🙂

I don't have the numbers handy but I thought they might have a bigger case load.

I'm an OSU student- You should get $10,000 for first year to offset tuition. You will also become a resident after the first year- I've not met anyone who hasn't been able to do this. In addition you are eligible for scholarship money through the school each year based on grades, etc... Let me know if you have other questions about the school.
