Anybody know what OHSU is up to? I haven't heard a thing from them. Are they reviewing yet?

As of one week ago they were just putting together this years applicant files.

i didn't apply there, but i remember last cycle people were talking about how slow they were. Some people never heard a thing from them until a rejection letter in march. 🙁 I feel like a lot of state schools take there time b/c they dont have a lot of people turn down their acceptances. Good luck to you, my cousin just gratuated from there this last year.

I called there last week and they said that they are still getting everything together like yellow snow said. My brother was accepted there a few years ago by december 1st so I imagine they are going to start pretty soon.

Got an e-mail today asking me to call to schedule an interview. Interviews begin on 10/23 😱

What?? U got interview invite e-mail on Sunday??

Yeah I got the interview email tonight too at like 1030 pm. I thought it was weird too to get an interview invite on a sunday night

Yeah, I was surprised. Maybe Mark Mitchell is heading out to that ADA thing in Vegas and wanted to get the e-mails out before leaving

Haven't got an interview yet, but PM me if you want any specific info on the city. Hopefully I'm not being rejected by my own school🙄

I got a call from mark mitchell on sunday night about my application and didn't understand why he was working and reviewing applicants on a sunday.

i got an e-mail too for the interview invite but i'm not sure if i'm going.

Do you happen to know anything about the Inn at Marquam Hill? OHSU recommended it as a place to stay. I live in Eugene, so I've been up in Portland a bunch, but have never checked out that place.

I'm not familiar with that one. What is the address?

3412 SW 13th Avenue

From Googling the address, it looks like it used to be called Hedlund's Bed and Breakfast? The only site I can find that mentions it is OHSU's, lol

Yeah, I was trying the same thing b/c I know I've driven by there before. Not a whole lot up there though, so if you want to do anything at all, I would recommend staying downtown somewhere, or somewhere along the waterfront.

Hmm, I'm driving up (luckily this place has free parking). I don't think I'm going to do too much, other than eating at whatever the closest McCormick and Schmick's is (mmmm, tasty calamari 😀 ) and maybe a little shopping at Pioneer Place. And wandering the OHSU area, if the rain isn't too bad! Was pretty torrential earlier today, eh?

Yeah, it was raining a little much...makes me want to go to ASDOH!😀 Have you checked our Henry's yet?

Nope! I've never been there, but after looking at the menu I may have to go.. This place: http://www.henrystavern.com/index.cfm, right? Portland has such great restaurants 🙂

 Yeah, the rain was a little much today.. I grew up in New Mexico, and after 8+ years in Oregon I'm still not quite used to the rainy season 😛

That's it. Great happy hour with a young crowd. Pool tables upstairs too. You are right, Portland has great restaurants, if you want anymore recommendations, let me know.

Yeah my wife and I love Henry's. I interviewed really late at OHSU last year and I am pretty sure they offer parking. They better give me an interview pretty soon or Mark and I are going to have a few words. Good luck at your interviews everyone. If UoP doesnt work out then OHSU will probably be my next choice.

Yeah...ditto, something about this school makes me uneasy.

I got the invite today. It was sent along with the secondary, which I was told to bring to the interview. What I don't like is that my interview is already next week and I know little about the school, if it is a good school and in what aspects, only what is on their website, which is very little.

I just got the "your application is part of a very selective pool" letter. Does everyone get that letter, or is that like a first cut?

And what is their secondary like?

i got that letter a couple days before the email invite, and the secondary is the standard fill in some personal info that is already on your aadsas page stuff🙄

I got that letter about a week ago or so. Nothing since then though. I didn't know there was a secondary, so maybe they don't require one for everyone? Who knows.

The school really seems fairly solid. They pride themselves on their clinical preparation with pretty stringent requirements. They make you do all your lab work which I hear can be a real pain, but I've known tons of people in the same boat, and they did just fine. Didactic curriculum seems pretty standard. The school is probably one of the older main buildings on the OHSU campus, but is really not too outdated inside. Their sim labs have their own monitors and are pretty new and seem good. Also they just built a new lounge/study area, meeting room type area on the top floor for student since the library is up the hill...it seems like a nice area to hang out and cruise the SDN page between classes🙂 The physical school is on top of a hill about 5 minutes from downtown, which is not a bad location. Parking is horrible, and 1/2 year dentals cannot evening purchase a parking pass for themselves...must be carpool or none. Ok, that was long, and probably what you already new, but hope it helps.🙂

Thank you for this reply Lemming, it was VERY helpful!

I'm thinkin about it.. Maybe tuesday, just depends on how expensive the plane tickets are..

I just got an email from them saying I haven't taken Chem II and they can't review my file until I do. I took it this summer and had a transcript sent to them...now it'll probably be a week and a half till they get the next one 🙁

Hey pine, fax the transcript to them and then have an official one sent. I'm sure it will speed up the process.

Hey everyone, I got an interview at OHSU on the 24th of October. I'm also staying at the Inn at Marquin or something like that. I'm driving down from WA on Monday afternoon and wanted to go and check out the area, anybody else has an interview there on Tuesday and wants to meet up and check out the area let me know. It's always funner and takes some of the anxiety away when you can go and enjoy yourself before the BIG day interview day.

Hey all~
If you go by last year...much of our class had interviews in January-early March (including us in staters). It seems that they are a little more ahead this year than last. Yes, Mark is out of town, and yes he works all hours of the night. I got my email at 3 am for an interview last year. The interview at OHSU, compared to my other interview (I cancelled all others once accepted) was very NON stressful. They try to make you feel comfortable and welcome so they can see your real personality (not the 'totally freaked out 'cause the rest of my life depends on the next five hours' personality). So, good luck, relax, and maybe I will see you around starting Monday.

Hi guys! The interview day today was very very relaxed. You have two 30 minute interviews -- they seemed to go by so fast! Mark Mitchell was there; he's great. 👍 When you have lunch with a current student, they try to arrange it with someone who went to the same undergrad as you (or if you're out of state, someone from the same state at least), which is nice. There were only 5 of us there, so there are plenty of opportunities to ask questions during the presentation at the beginning. When you first arrive, they have you do a writing sample (I guess they have a different question each day? Or is that UCSF? I can't remember 😛 ). Don't worry about that, you have lots of time (assuming you arrive on time) and it is easy. Plus there's only 2/3rds of a page available, so you don't have to think of a lot to put down 😛

Have fun everyone 🙂

I agree with you completely. The interview was very relaxed and layed back. Mark seems like a really nice and approachable guy and everyone on campus including the students and faculty are very nice. I didn't really like my essay question, but I knew that one was coming. I'm pretty sure there was four of us being interviewed that day, and not five. Overall the school is one of my top choices. Some may complain that they don't have as much funding as private schools, but when I saw the simulation labs, and oral surgery clinic, it appeared fine to me. I have been managing a practice for over a year now, and I know that you don't need to have all of the top of the line equipment to get the job done. It makes it easier to use the basics, because then you can take those basics and apply them to the more advanced equipment and supplies out there. As for the laboratory work that you have to do at OHSU, I think that it is a strength and not a weakness in their curriculum. How else would you know when you are doing a crown seat, overdenture, partial, or a regular denture if the dental lab did a good job, if you don't know what it's supposed look like and withstand. It also makes it easier for labs to work with a dentist that knows what he's talking about when discussing cases with lab technicians. Sorry for the wrong message, but I just want to reassure applicants that they program at OHSU is definitely worth checking out. If anyone has any questions let me know.
