Hey all,

I am just wanting to know if there are any other applicants to the OHSU MD/PhD program. I have called a few times but only reach the voice mail system. I have not heard a peep from them (they did send me a secondary) and my app has been complete since mid-november.

I appreciate any indication that the program still-exists. 😉

Hey Isidella,

My app was complete in mid-November at OHSU as well and I just got the interview offer via snail mail, so the program does exist.🙂

Yay! Congrats! (I guess I should expect good/bad news soon)!

I too got the snail-mail invite. But I'm way on the other side of the country, and an old PI friend, whose advice I usually ignore, said not to bother going. Anyone have some good points for me! I need someone to convince me to make the visit!😕

If you are interested in Neruo type stuff there are a number of people in the Vollum institute that do first rate work. The institute is on the medical campus and my understanding is that you can do your PhD with members of the institute. Some of them actually hold joint appointments with the school of medicine. I have also heard that Portland is a nice place to live. I am going there to check it out on the 28th of this month. If you would like to know more then feel free to send me a pm.

Our CDB (Cell & Developmental Biology) program is also strong. A few of the PI's are well-known, ie Brian Druker (responsible for Gleevec's success). Neuroscience is probably the best, since the Vollum Institute PI's have tons of bling from NIH, and a beautiful new building. But, I know a lot of those PI's won't just take random graduate students. The core facilities here are good too (different types of microarray, proteonomics, SELDI, MALDI, QTOF, etc.). Another nice thing about the MSTP program is they don't look at residency status.

It's also very close to being approved for MSTP, which won't mean much for students, since we get stipends here already. Granted, as far as west coast schools go, it's no UCSF. But things have been growing for the last ~15 years, and a couple new research buildings are planned, which means there would be about 6 total.

Portland is great city to live. Most of the student live up on the hill though (where school is) so there's no local night-life, but Portland is close to beating Seattle for being one of the cleanest, 'most enlightened' places to live.

There are views of downtown/Mt St Helens from many labs. No undergraduate campus (which i sometimes miss). On-campus housing demolished in august, but you can find apartments a stone's throw up the hill for ~600/mo. Small classes (~90 students each, 4-5 each year for MSTP). Dr. Rotwein is in charge of MSTP, (phone 503 494 0536), i think ~35 students interview each year.

hope this helps.
